Description
Twokinds Tutorials - Digitigrade LegsLooking around Deviantart, I noticed that there weren't very many good, detailed guides on drawing characters with digitigrade legs, like those featured on my Keidran and Basitin races. Digitigrade, for those unaware, is a term for an animal that walks on their digits (toes) rather that flat-footed, as we humans do. This style of character design can be difficult for someone unused to this type of anatomical structure. Now, I am not claiming to be any sort of expert. But I have been drawing these guys for more than ten years now, and I often get asked how I draw certain things. So this is not necessarily a "how to draw" tutorial" as it is a "how I draw" tutorial, if you get my meaning.
I hope this information can prove useful for those of you who are aspiring artists, or at least interesting to those who wish to learn more about how I go about my drawing process. So without further adieu, please allow Flora to demonstrate for you how it works! Enjoy!

This is excellent.Β
I appreciate your distinction between "how to draw" vs "How I draw."Β
There actually are not ANY digitigrade bipeds from nature that are good references.Β Birds of various types have radically different gross morphology since their upper bodies connect differently at the pelvis.Β Same would apply to dinosaurs or marsupials like kangaroos.Β So no mater how you do it, you are adding your creativity into designing it.Β Therefor, its harder to say which designs if any are most 'right.'
So, sometimes I wonder if its even POSSIBLE to have a 'humanoid' with digitigrade leg structure.Β Maybe it would not be able to keep its balance, or maybe it's leg muscles would be too stressed to stand upright?Β For example, looking at Nightcrawler from the x-men; there is no way he could stand up without superhuman leg muscles or something.Β Even then half the time he looks like he would just fall over because of where is center of gravity is etc.Β I suspect that it would work better if the three leg segments were nearly equal in length but that the biped's total height is not increased; Much shorter 'thigh' than in humans, slightly shorter 'shin' and longer 'foot.'Β And then the creature would stand upright with minimal bend in leg joints. Β You end up with critters like from Tyson Tan's designs.Β Looking at it, I think that could work mechanically for an organism.Β

Wow, this is very well done and useful. I like that it's concept based with examples; step-by-step tutorials rarely actually teach the whys and hows of the posing. Nice job!

What adorable models. Β What I really need are tips on how to draw a snout, i'm awful at it.
Oh and, the Elder Scrolls Khjiit and Argonians actually don't have these kind of legs (which I found incredibly disappointing.)

Bethesda could have used this when they made morrowind. Then maybe today khajiit and argonians would still be digitgrade legged.

i know u probably dont want to hear anothers opinion, but the feet should be longer because they look like the length human feet are standing on the toes, the tarsals should be the length of the calf so body has more support. digitigrade paws should be taller and longer, the way she is sitting defines the legs still look plantigrade. this is not judgement but rather help. please dont get mad at me.Β Β

I love anthro type characters, but drawing them... definitely not my strong suit. This, though, brings out a lot of good points that I think I'll be able to use to improve! If nothing else, it helps to understand. Thanks for the great work and explanations!
