Info/History:
Paik was born and raised to a small Maori community in the outskirts of New Zealand. Her family were the traditional sort, intent on keeping their ancient traditions and culture alive and intact in the wake of the Great War. Many people of her community had suffered from loss because of the war, and thus, like many other humans, a bitter hatred towards demons had grown, Paikea’s parents included. Paik had grown up being taught by them to fear demons, painting them as nothing but monsters. So, her parents wanted her to grow up prepared and ready to face the dangers of the world should the moment ever arise. Paik was a natural athlete, and had grown up to be a gym rat her whole life; from self defense, to every sort of contact sport under the sun. But Paikea’s passion had always been for swimming and the Oceanside she had been born on.
One day, when Paikea was 8 years old, her conditioned way of thinking was soon called into question when her aunt, who did not share her parents’ prejudice against demons, supplied her belief that demons and humans weren’t as different as they were lead to believe, and leaving Paikea with a lesson she would never forget;
“Even if they might not look it, humans can be monsters just as much as demons can. Just as demons can be just as human as we are, even if they may not look it.”
When she was 12 years old, the war having just recently ended, she had gone out to swim in the ocean, but went too far out and the current became too strong for her to swim against. But just when she thought she was going to drown, she was pulled up to the surface again by a pair of scaly arms that began to tug her to shore, and when she looked up to see who her rescuer was, she was greeted with the sight of none other than a demon. But she didn’t scream or try to fight them off, but rather she was too mesmerized and fascinated by her rescuer to do so. After taking her to shore, the demon told her to be more careful and not to swim too far out again before disappearing. It was then that her Aunt’s words resurfaced in her mind, and she went out again the next day, and the demon was there again, and the day after that, and the day after that. And thus began an odd friendship between human and demon. She kept her friendship a secret from her parents, but only her aunt knew, and she encouraged it, believing it to be a good learning experience, and she did. Paik began to learn more about demons than what she was told, and learned first hand that not all demons were monsters.
But after 5 years, her secret was soon found out when one of her classmates followed her after school, and word quickly spread throughout the community until it reached Paik’s parents…Paik doesn’t know what became of her friend that night, as she was locked in her room. All she knows is that she never saw them again after that. Her parents expected her to carry on with her life and forget out her friend. Not long after the incident, she decided to live with her aunt for the next four years (much to her parents disapproval, but she no longer cared what they wanted), having moved to another side of the country, where she went to college right after high school to study marine biology, something she had been passionate about before, but even then she’d lost her joy in that as well, reminding her too much of the friend she had lost. Until she saw a pamphlet on the bulletin board on her campus saying DAMMED was recruiting…
Why the character wants to join DAMMED:
Paikea wanted to join DAMMED because she believes that humans and demons can achieve peace, and to also prove her family and her home community wrong in the process. But not only that, she wanted to join because she wanted to do something with her life that would be beneficial for her home as well, to make it so that her family didn’t have to feel like they needed to live in fear, and to also make sure that things (like what happened to her friend) doesn’t befall onto other demons who just wish to live peacefully…
"She'll be right, mate...I just know it. We can't keep fighting forever, can we?"
Other:
S/O: Demiromantic Pansexual
Voice Claim is Maisey Rika
Paik is transgender/transsexual; she was designated male at birth, but underwent SRS when she was 18 with the help of her aunt. Her parents were actually pretty supportive of her before their falling out.
She is actually 25% black, and 75% Polynesian (both her parents were Maori, but her mother was half black).
She speaks both English and Te Reo (Maori). She also has a very heavy Kiwi (New Zealand) accent.
She doesn’t like being called by her full first name; she prefers to be called Paik (Pronounced as “Pike”), because most people who try to say her name end up saying it horribly wrong and it annoys the crap outta her.
She takes great pride in her hair and is always dying her hair different colors, typically using pastel blues, pinks, and purples, but prefers blues.
She’s an incredibly strong swimmer and has a good amount of upper body strength due to her surfing frequently as well as working out.
Does a haka every morning to help her wake up and get pumped up for the day.
Paik’s relationship with her parents is very strained, and had completely stopped all communication with her after informing them she planned to join DAMMED. She still writes to them and her aunt when she can. She still hasn’t heard anything back from her parents.
She has several tattoos, all of them being traditional Maori tattoos (or moko); she has a manta ray on her back covering her shoulder blades, a koru (spiral) on her upper right thigh in the shape of a whale tail, and an actual whale tail covering her entire collarbone. It hurt like hell, but hey, she loves them.
Has a koru (spiral) pendant (reminiscent to the tattoo on her thigh) carved from a whale bone. It was given to her by her demon friend, and it’s her most personal item. She wears it under her uniform or finds other ways to have it on her person but not in the way.
