What a cool battle scene, what amazing imagination you have. Air versus water.

A lot of birds catch fish. I do not know it happens the other way. So the merfolk are in for a loosing battle. Kind of Pearl Harbor. Or am I mistaken ?

The merfolk do not lose. The take down a couple dozen but the remaining gargoyles learn quick and adjust their height above the water. Their main targets are the soldiers waiting for them in the city.

Actually, where I live, some types of fish prey on birds. Bass frequently pull swallows, small ducks, and flycatchers from the water. I'm almost certain our catfish do as well.

Yes, very large.

So much to look at! Awesome gargoyle swooping in from the left and the others fighting in the water being dragged down by the merfolk! Massive city behind (that would have taken a while to build/place on its own) Superb and realistically believable as always!! Love the one merfolk leaping up out of the water to attack the gargoyle!

Yeah, this is my newest. And I really like how it turned out. I have been waiting about 3 or 4 months to finally work on the merfolk/gargoyle battle, short-lived as it is. My next piece is a quick sequel to this but I still have postwork to do on it. Actually the next couple are since Abbey and the Undine are watching this scene take place. I couldn't get this scene out of my head. It has stuck with me all these months. I kept imagining these gargoyles coming in low over the harbor to attack when suddenly mer-people start leaping out of the water and pulling them down. Suddenly the gargoyles are no longer in their 'zone'.Β

I loved working on the coastline buildings. It took some time creating the backdrop but it rendered all in one pass. It's incredible how much memory is saved when bump, normal, and displacement maps are removed.Β

Thank you for all the words of encouragement and support. I appreciate it.

Yeah, I pretty much have to remove all those maps for most of my scenes now in order to render them! But that's cool that you have these images in your head for so long and I guess they get refined over time so when you finally make them it's almost exactly as you envisaged them. And no problem, you're an inspiration to me!

The posing of the gargoyles is perfect for this scene you can really feel the energy they are expending to attack.

Glad you decided to post the pictures here, Glen !! The scene with the gargoyles that were giving you headaches, is that one where they fly over the city? Well, it's super awesome! All the scenes are spectacular !!

This one is epic too! And all this water .... it's so hot here,Β  this image makes me want to jump in the sea and swim with the merfolk!

And I have questions, as always. (spoiler alert)

I know something is going to happen to Sumara, but in this scene she looks physically well. Something is still going to happen to her or it will be a consequence of what she suffered.

Of course you don't have to say if you don't want to. ^^

Haha You are so amusing.

Yes, the aerial scene was a nightmare and I ended up with terrible eye strain. I think I was off of Daz and generally the computer too for many days. I ended up modelling several buildings and forcing myself to learn the basics of UV-mapping and wow all that detailed work stressed my eyes. It felt like they were scratched with glass. And then the buildings didn't fit! Argh! It literally took a month to finally complete that scene and I'm not 100% happy with it. I like it but think it could have been better. The new monitor really helps against the eye strain though. Haven't had a problem since. Big monitors are so nice.

You're in Brazil, so it's your summer, correct? Merfolk you might have fun with, just don't go swimming with the gargoyles.

In regards to Sumara: this sceneΒ  I jumped a little ahead in the timeline but will be filling in soon. The Sumara/horse scene takes place during midnight-predawn hours after the merfolk return her to the Atlantean outpost:Β  Β The soldiers traveling with her abandoned the outpost for fear of attack and to escort her back to Atlantis. They set out quickly to Atlantis, but it's a long distance to get there. While Sumara and company traveled during the day to Atlantis, the gargoyles were battling Kolin, Abbey, the merfolk, and the Atlantean forces. The merfolk were unexpected watchdogs for Atlantis and they had alerted them to the approaching gargoyles hours ahead of the attack. This gives Atlantis time to secure the city and establish battlefronts. Sumara arrives in Atlantis the morning after the gargoyle attack. And those scenes are coming up soon...she meets Kolin and Abbey for the first time and something of a haphazard plan to rescue Ender is established.

Sumara is safe now. There are no plans to torture her further. Remember, she's vampiric and somewhat of a quick healer. She's not 100% healed in the scene of her on the horse, but her body is on the mend. Mentallly/emotionally she's not okay, but that will take time. Plus she's the one who actually saves Ender, so she'll get to throw a few punches around.

I have about seven to eight more gargoyle battle scenes to do which all lead up to Sumara on horse. Then there's a few reunited, tearful scenes, a plan is established, and finally the long journey to rescue Ender begins. I have a few surprises planned and I'm probably going to have to model a few landscape pieces myself. But I will say Abbey and company come across some loyal companions along the way who join the rescue. The Morrigan's going to get her ass handed to her I think.

Yes. Β

Oh no, I'm going to stay as far as possible from these monsters!!! Ugh! Β

Thanks for the explanation, Glen! ^^ I thought Sumara was going to die, but I'm glad to know she's well and strong enough (soon) to kick some ass!! It's amazing all those epic battle scenes that you do! I canΒ΄t wait to see more!!

What program do you use to model? Blender? Zbrush? Hexagon?

TykeyStudios In reply to Telperion-Studio [2019-02-28 02:07:53 +0000 UTC]

Wings and Hexagon. I usually model in Wings3D first and then move it to Hexagon before sending it back to Wings to UV map.

I absolutely hate Blender. I've tried so many times to understand it over the years but I just hate it. I'd love Zbrush, but it's way out of my price range.

Zbrush, yeah same here.

I have Blender and Hexagon only. I spent a few days practicing a bit on Hexagon last year with the help of a friend. But I never understood the UV part. Although I only did some basic things, I still did more than what I did in Blender. I find Blender very complicated. They said the latest version is better ... I have not updated yet. ... I'm a little lazy. Β Β

Yes, I agree about Hexagon. I don't like the UV mapping aspects of it. I never used it.
