Description So an alternate timeline of one of my alternate timelines. Basically an idea I had a while ago about an alternate, more steampunky, US Civil War that lasted for 15 years. Basically I made this map, then worked backwards to try an explain how it got to this point. I kinda ended up liking the world building I was doing on the alternate Civil War stuff more than this so I never really got around to posting this. So I ended up with two timeline ideas; one is were after a 15 year long Civil War the US reunites and goes down our history a bit more differently (to put it mildly), the other this, were the US government collapses after a prolonged civil war and the major captains of industry/robber barons carve up the nation for themselves (or at the very least take the most profitable parts for themselves). This is the less steampunky timeline were the US stayed together.

By the end of 1876, the Confederacy had all but collapsed. Union forces had driven a wedge down the Mississippi River dividing it in two. Texas was facing invasion from all sides as Union forces marching from California threated the West, it north threatened by Union forces marching through Indian Territory, its coastal cities taken by the Union navy and marines, the Union navy gaining free reign over the Rio Grande and the Colorado Rivers, and the east under attack from Union forces that had just finished mopping up the last of the defenders in Shreveport, Louisiana. In Alabama Union forces were marching east after taking Mississippi, made worse by a slave revolt after forcing many of its slaves into the army due to a desperate shortage of manpower and supported by the Union. The Confederate government panicking over this sent most of its troops defending the Cotton Bale (a series of defenses in Northern Virginia consisting of earthworks, fortresses, and landmines constructed during the presidency of John C. Breckinridge) leaving only the young, the old, the sick and injured, and only a handful of veteran troops. The Union used this to its advantage and broke through the defenses to capture Richmond by mid November. By December, much of the Confederate government, including its president, Alexander Stevens, were captured. By the beginning of 1877, the majority of the Confederacy's armies had laid down their arms thus bringing an end to the Civil War. As a result of the Civil War lasting 15 years, the Union was much less willing to show leniency on the South. The Southern states were placed under marshal law and divided up into 6 districts. They would only be allowed back into the Union by ratifying the Reconstruction amendments and adopting a new state constitution. They would then have to ask Congress to be admitted back into the Union. Slowly the Southern states would be readmitted into the Union, and by the 1890's federal soldiers would withdraw from the South. By the turn of the century, most of the progress made during Reconstruction would be reversed as many of the Southern states began introducing what would become known as the Jim Crow Laws.
