Description The Model 1873 was introduced in 1873 for the Union Army. Intended as a replacement for the Model 1869 Warhawk and Model 1870 Cavalry (at least for the infantry), the Double-Action Army was intended to address the most common complaints from the two revolvers. It featured a swing out cylinder to reduce loading time, was lighter than either pistol, and was rather compact, but was still as powerful as its predecessors. The Double-Action Army was popular with the Union Army and captured pistols were popular with Confederate units as well. While intended for the Union Army, cavalry units widely liked the weapon for the same reasons as the army.
