In 1866 after evaluating the Springfield Model 1865, the Springfield wasn't entirely satisfied with the weapon's performance. Springfield began working on what would be the Model 1871. In 1870, the first batch of weapons were ready for testing. Two Union infantry regiments were equipped with the Model 1870 to test the weapon on the field. While the Army was mostly satisfied with the weapon, they complained about its excessive weight. Springfield responded by cutting down the amount of wood used, giving the weapon its skeletal look. The Model 1871 was well liked mainly because of its high-rate of fire, long-range, and high stopping power.
