Description
"Untamed" (Done in Markers, Colored Pencil & Gel Pen)Part 3: My first attempt at realism and it's finally finished. Probably not the best idea to do a progression piece when you are trying something for the first time (because everyone can potentially watch you fall flat on your face, step by step lol). But I truly believed I could do it... and now I can go back to being a lazy cartoonist .

It's funnny I grew up drawing hundreds of pictures of Spiderman. Even though I could draw him in my sleep, it scares the hell out of me to do a Spiderman piece. He's my favourite superhero, and I never wanted to do one, until I felt like I could do him justice. I finally got a good vision and the courage to do it. Hope you will check it out!

Completely understood! I was very hesitant to draw my favorite character in realism style (and share it here)!
Can't wait to see it!

Post it! Can't hurt, because 99% of omments are positive. Plus I've seen you're realism, and it ain't no joke! You're good at it

I actually did...XD
Sailor Moon - Kaioh Michiru as a Violinist
You're right...posting it couldn't hurt. If others like it, great! But I know at least one person would. (that's myself lol)
Also it was interesting that you mentioned that I should do more animal drawing last week, since I was actually working on one (in colored pencil) and just posted it yesterday. I was struggling a lot with the paper - never seemed to be able to fill in all the white space no matter how much pressure I applied, and colorless only helped slightly bit. Your works are really clean and smooth and completely filled in. Any tips or suggestions?

^ Wow, I love the Sailor Moon Piece btw.
What kind of paper were you using? It sounds like the paper, rather than your method. Before I got into art, I didn't think paper made that much of a difference, but for me (and my style) it's huge. I use both colored pencil and markers, so I invested in a few really expensive "mixed media" pads. Maybe it's just me, but they don't work for me at all, and I'm terrible with them. I hate mixed media paper. Majority of my pieces are done on the toned paper, as most are done with colored pencil, so this might not be great for other people. If I use white paper, then it's "Drawing" paper, but not "sketch" paper, as sketch paper isn't gritty or thick enough for my style.
As for the (pencil) colorless blenders, I'm not good with them and they've ruined many of my pieces. Again, this might be because of the way I colour. My method is one of the no-no's of coloured pencil, where I layer and layer, until the blend is right. I find that when I use colourless blender, it doesn't allow me to blend many layers because it smooths out the paper too much. I do still use them, but usually at the (and very lightly) if I absolutely have to.

Yes that one was done on mixed media paper. I think Canson is the brand. They are not expensive. I also have Strathmore sketch paper and smooth Bristol for pencil drawings, and colored pencil paper. I found the grains/ridges in colored pencil papers good to catch colors and blending, but a bit hard to fill in the “valleys”. Then small detailed areas would be my biggest struggle, as I try to apply more pressure, the sharp prismacolor pencil tips break too easily.

The problem might be from putting too much pressure to fill in those "valleys". I've found the only way to do that, is with multiple layers of light pressure (in circular motions), until the valleys are filled in. Always start out any area of coloring with very ight pressure in every color you plan to blend. You wouldn't believe how many times I go back and forth blending, from dark to light, light to dark until it's right. But hey, I'm no expert lol.

Thank you very much for the tips! I never tried circular motions blending but will try this in my next colored pencil drawing! I felt like I had put 10 layers in some of them and still not getting the valleys filled LOL but I will definitely try your method!

Oh, I forgot... a lot of my pieces are in combination with markers as well. Any big areas I need coloured are always with markers, either as a base layer, or just the finished colour. I use Chart-pak makers, which are super wet and very hard to use (because they bleed so much) but they are definitely good for filling in valleys. That's one of my secrets for very vivid and smooth colouring. One more secret (which I've never shared with anyone) is, I will go to the extreme of taking a blowdryer (on hot setting) to my blending pencils or final colours to get it super smooth . I've only done this with face complexion when I need it super smooth and if regular blending hasn't worked as well as I wanted.
*Also, light colours will break up and fade with time, so capture the picture as soon as you can, after colouring for the best results. I hope this helps

Thank you for sharing your tips and secrets with me! Now hide them so that only nobody else knows - I won't say a word! (j/k)
Makes a lot of sense that you apply markers, otherwise for this drawing I would guess you have used almost one Prismacolor black pencil already XD. I only started using white pen recently to create light on the edges and I like it so far. Will look into markers to fill the empty spaces!
About the hairdryer, does the color wax 'melt' a bit so it blends with other colours better?
As for the finished works using graphite or coloured pencils, I apply fixative spray on them so that the colours will stay.

^ Haha it's more of a secret, because I'm embarrased about using my hair-dryer on my colored pencils. It seems kind of neanderthal like Yes, I blow dry it until the tip looks wet, but only as an extreme finishing step. Yes, will blend better, but beware because it will harden and get smooth pretty fast.
Any of the pieces (like my mermaids) where I colour the background are done with markers. I have to go over it 3 or 4 times to get it smooth and lose the stroke marks. I only use Chart-pak markers for this (because they're so wet), and they are super expensive. Also a lot of my pieces (like this one) are first coloured with markers before adding the coloured pencil on top. This way, you will never have gaps. I did use one full white pencil on this piece

I wouldn't be embarrassed at all! I actually saw someone mentioning hairdryer before on the deviation but I never thought twice of what it meant. Now it makes sense!
Tools, hacks, or whatever it takes, as long as it's safe and makes your artworks the way you wanted, I'm all for it! I am guilty of using my phone/instagram or Google Photo to change the tint/brightness on my traditional works, in order to match the 'retina-display' in my eyes LOL
I'm going to look into markers soon, it seems like a great supplement to the coloured pencil drawings! Do they blend well? One full white pencil?! Wow!!
I really love the prismacolor white! It blends so well and can create a beautiful matte finish.

I've never heard of anyone else doing that besides myself, so it might seem pretty weird to people. I think everyone changes the lighting to make their pieces either look their best or look more like the original. Some photos I take look just like the piece, while some others, the blemishes show up more than what's seen.
Colored pencil can be applied right over the markers, after the ink dries. It makes it a lot more vibrant if you use the same colours. For larger areas (to be coloured), you don't have to go over it the whole area to get a solid colour without any gaps. Sometimes I do it to get the base colour I want, while using a different colour of pencil over top. Like on this piece, the base colours are much darker, so most of the fur is actually just the white pencil over top of the marker colour.

I passed an art supply store, and if I weren't in rush I would have walked in and checked out Chartpak/copic markers But yeah, one thing at a time...I have the tendency to go overboard and get more than I need, and sometimes even end up using them once. LOL
I've been practicing pencil techniques on colored pencil papers these days.... the circular motion trick seem to be working pretty well!

You and I have a lot of the same tendencies lol. I totally go overboard because I like to try everything and when I find a brand or a type I like... I end up wanting the whole set. I actually plan to do a journal entry with pictures to show how ridiculous my art supplies have gotten in just one year. It's probably a blessing that you couldn't stop in the art-supplies store
