Description
Just something I'd like to see as far as basic core gameplay. Essentially a melding of Kingdom Hearts and Xenoblade Chronicles with an emphasis on allowing easy access to the abilities of all party members no matter who the player character is at the time.
Team Captain
The player character obviously, while the others in your party are off doing their thing (based on programmable protocols you set like in the first Kingdom Hearts game's party member system), you take direct control of any one of the four members in your party....well, actually you would controlling all four at the same time but I'll get to that later. With the Team Captain you are basically taking control of that character's basic functions directly, namely his/her basic movement across the board and the basic ATTACK and DODGE functions...
Attack & Dodge
At the push of a button you would initiate a low level basic attack or a virtually fool proof evasion maneuver without having to score through the action menu. The catch is that there is a set "cool down" timer that requires you to wait before you can use either again in the battle (therefore prevent spamming of these features). You could equip items, equipment and of course external weapons to the characters to influence not only how much cool down is actually needed but also how effective the dodge and attack features are when used.
Combat Skill
The more advance class of "basic attacks", these are attacks and/or simple tactics that have more kick. Each individual attack in this category doesn't require Full Burst Energy (FBE) but they do have their own individual "cool down" timer, which depending on the move may be ridiculously short or noticeably long. The main thing to consider is that none of the attacks in this category ever exceed a damage output passed 999 points (even when the characters using them level up high.
And as you might notice, the available "Combat Skills" are each color coded, it is here that the pseudo ability to play all four characters at once will come into play. This extends to all major options in the action menu. When you select an attack or other option, regardless of who is Team Captain, whatever character is assigned to the selected attack/option's color will be the one to carry out that action. As demonstrated in this crappy gif, blue attacks/options are carried out by Terry while white attacks/options are carried out by Virus. As long as it is selected that character will do it immediately.
Fullburst Energy
This section of the menu would basically be the "Spells" of the game, the top tier attacks and options that exceed damage outputs of 999 and require available FBE to utilize. FBE does refill on its own but it does take time in which case potions or elixirs will be required to fill it up faster if you were in a pinch. The Fullburst Energy category is split into two sub-categories...
-Super Moves
The straight forward "spells", the firas and curagas and so on and so forth. The amount of FBE required is a clear tell how powerful these moves will be, and further more you would be given a special quick time event of some manner which if successful will net you a small point bonus to the move's base effectiveness. If you fail the quick time event you get no point bonus, regardless though you still carry out the attack bonus or no bonus.
-Transform
Basically the "Summons" feature only instead of summoning some demi-deity or chaos creature from thin air you would be having the character of your choice to go Super Saiyan. It would play out similarly to the Eidolon system from FFXIII, the character's "Super Mode" having a set time limit to dish out as much pain and havoc as possible before their time in their Super Mode ends with a grand finale super move. None of the other characters would be on the board during this short period.
Party Menu
This is where you can choose who is the Team Captain in your party, more importantly though this is also where you would swap/change characters in your party during combat. Whenever a character falls in combat you will immediately be asked to bring in a replacement from the Benched Characters (if they are available), and even if all members in your four man party go down as long as there are still Benched Characters to bring out you are still in the game. Since you can only use certain attacks/options when the color's assigned character is in the party, you would be able to preprogram which attacks/options would go into the Combat Skill and Fullburst Energy categories when you switched that character from Benched to active Party Member.Β
And as a bonus feature there are also "Tag Attacks" that require a bare minimum of FBE, these not only change out characters in your party but the character you bring in will immediately execute the attack. Best yet is that you could assign any of the Combat Skills you would acquire as a "Tag Attack", said Combat skill would go right into the Combat Skill category during the fight.

>During an especially annoying battle
Sammy: What the hell is with this guy's full heals?!
Terry: Yah it's like that fucking metal turtle thing inside Mount Kazai in Skies of Arcadia.
Virus: Someone needs to nuke this thing already.
>Virus and Sammy look at Terry
Terry: I'm not doing that.
Virus: Then summon the guy who will, this fight has gotten super boring.
Terry: *Sigh*, fine.
>Fullburst Energy
>Super Move
>Summon: God Mode
Nick Dengi: Sup bitches?!

Hmm, that sounds like a really cool way to control a party. Quicker and more dynamic than taking turns with them, and more hands-on than just controlling one character while the others are purely AI.

So will the party try and surround the enemy? Because I would love that and keep thieving enemies from robbing me and then running away. Kind of reminds me of Beyond The Beyond for the PS1.Β
Great job!

My first time meeting such thieves are the enemies called Vice from the Final Fantasy series. I once had elixirs and great weapons pocked right in the middle of a fight...and then they took off with it never to be seen again! If you kill the bastards you might get them back. Beyond The Beyond by Camelot, if I remember correctly, had similar creatures that mad hit and runs. Β
And do not get me started on Dungeon & Dragons...

So was this back when Final Fantasy was actually worth the elitist reputation it garnered or is this even in the latter entries?

This was a time when Final Fantasy was seen as one of the greatest RPGS you could ever hope to play. That each story was a classical tale and with each one was nominated by fans as the greatest game ever. That was the golden age back then.Β
But to answer your question, it was back then. If they added thievery as a possible hazard then it would be an interesting concept and keep players on their toes. It did for me...always kill thieves with big magic or swords first. I'm not sure if is still in the games theses days, I have yet to fully check.
Sorry if this response was...wordy.

There is no "back" here.

If you based this off of your works, the possibilities and combinations.... They'd be in the thousands.
As for mechanics, well all that makes sense to me, then again my only experience with RPG's is Pokemon and the Mario and Luigi series.

Yeah Pokemon was my first RPG, probably wouldn't even play Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy were it not for that XD
The first Xenoblade Chronicles is another good one.
