Description After Guadalcanal had fallen, US forces advanced north along Solomons and finally landed their forces on Bougainville at Cape Torokina on 1 November 1943. Japanese HQ realized, that after loss of this island there will be breach in their defence perimeter, and US forces will use it to reach Rabaul and even Truk. In order to prevent it, several transports with landing force were sent from Rabaul. They were escorted by the squadron under the command of Vice Admiral Sentaro Omori ([link] ) on the flagship Myoko. He was the teacher in torpedo school, and he had never taken part in serious actions before. After the squadron was noticed by american recon plane, Omori ordered transports to turn back to Rabaul, while squadron continued the advance. After that on 2 November during the night fight US ships wrecked Sendai. During maneuvering Samidare collided with Shiratsuyu, and Myoko collided with Hatsukaze. Japanese forces withdrew without any sufficient success, and US ships finished off Sendai and Hatsukaze. It was the end of Battle of Empress Augusta Bay.

Here you can see the participated IJN ships' names: [link]
Agano was the head ship of her class. I've drawn another ship from Agano class before: [link]
Also I drew Hatsukaze: [link]

If I remember correctly, Omori's task force consisted of the Myoko-class heavy cruisers Myoko and Haguro, the Agano-class light cruiser Agano, the Sendai-class light cruiser Sendai, the Shiratsuyu-class destroyers Shigure, Shiratsuyu, and Samidare, the Kagero-class destroyer Hatsukaze, the Yugumo-class destroyer Naganami, and the Akizuki-class destroyer Wakatsuki.

Not only does this one look powerfull and pretty,it also seems like a propoganda painting from Japan during the Showa period.
Bravo!

I have an idea for a next pic you could make.

A row of parked Katyusha launchers during dusk firing a barrage of missiles going off-screen.

Just an idea,though.

More like having the Katyusha launchers upfront.

Great Joe....My only suggestion is that the Main ship should be bigger

Thank you.
I did it not so big because of distance between the columns. It should look even smaller (more far), but I sacrificed the realism for benefit of expressiveness.

Great drawing as usual
Maybe the Myoko looks a bit small? The Aft turrets are hardly seen

U-Joe In reply to Tzoli [2012-08-22 09:25:22 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.
No, it is because Myoko is placed not under at an angle of 90 degrees to spectator. That's why Aft turrets are 'hiding' behind the structures and visible length of the ship is reduced.
