I was obsessed with this as a child. This is the only piece I have seen Chief Anderson portrayed in! You need to do one with 7 Zark 7! He was so cute.

Chief Anderson looks like Archangel from Airwolf but with both eyes and no shaded left lens

Personally, I prefer the reimagining of the Battle Of The Planets series since it's about as close to the Japanese series Science Ninja Team Gatchaman as possible. I never read the comics, but I understand that they even killed off Jason, taking a cue from the final episodes of Gatchaman?

I love BoP but they really should have revamped the characters for the comic. I know Alex Ross was bound and determined to do it this way but I personally feel like that is why the book failed. People love their retro cartoons and such but they want to see them in a new light. Aw well. Great pic.

Gotta disagree. I think the appeal is just like that for Capcom properties: people like them a certain way. Did you read the comics? Plenty of "new light" there... ditto for the Thundercats titles. But it's not quite Battle of the Planets or Thundercats if you throw Jim Lee or one of his many clones at it and try to suppress the original visual style (which is, frankly, what sold every nostalgic fan on the original properties).

The most likely reason that those titles didn't become DC/WildStorm staples is that art in this style, of the caliber of Udon's talents, does not come cheap or easy.

WillCaligan In reply to mantic [2010-09-24 01:15:47 +0000 UTC]

Really? Both comics could not sell. They were not making money. People do not want to see these characters as they were but how they would be now. The object is not to just sell to old fans but to make new ones. Without new fans the product will fail and no teen is going to want to watch anime or read a book with dated designs. That is just marketing 101. Ross thought that his popularity would make people buy the book and it did not. I am an original fan and I don't need nostalgic crap. I want new fresh and exciting stuff.

DC makes enough money to pay UDON. WB is doing just fine. The problem was the books did not warrent them spending the money.

mantic In reply to WillCaligan [2010-10-21 21:08:06 +0000 UTC]

Again, did you actually read those comics? Both BotP and Thundercats were updated considerably and written for a more mature audience. As you put it "as they would be today" (I would say "better than they would be today," looking at the state of cartoons -- even anime -- the last decade or so). The art in the books (character designs being integral) was of a higher calibre than anything done in the 80s -- on par with or better than top modern anime, so I don't buy that was a problem.

Marketing 101 (hmm... I took Advertising, but don't recall a specific "Marketing 101") is more along the lines of "baffle them with BS" and "it's not the product, it's the pitch." Sometimes good work doesn't sell sufficient volume for no good reason at all... and a lot of times absolute garbage sells like chocolate-covered sex. If it weren't a crapshoot, life might actually be fair.

WillCaligan In reply to mantic [2010-10-22 01:19:30 +0000 UTC]

Wow. You just like to argue.

Is the book still going? Nope. Then it failed. You can say what you want but the proof is in the pudding.

I can promise that anything that is produced in Japan with these characters will not have these out dated costumes in them. Because it is about making it fresh and new and not the same as what has already been seen.

Epic fail.

mantic In reply to WillCaligan [2010-10-29 05:20:02 +0000 UTC]

Nah, you're just very negative, man.

You're also pretty ignorant of Japanese anime, as "retro" concepts revived with modern animation techniques (but the same familiar designs) are quite popular. Google "Mazinger" for a prime example from the same era as BotP.

By your standard, every comic-book 'mini series' is a failure, since they don't become endless franchises. Even though most are not intended to do so. Did Ross say that was the intent with BotP?

When I look at this generation of comic-book talents I see a lot of people who don't want to be cranking out books about the same characters forever. Alex Ross in particular does not seem content sticking with any one thing for too long.
