Here's a 3-step look at the process for a cover piece, in this case it's for 'The Book of Bone and Ebony', an older Exalted RPG sourcebook:

1) Initial layout: This one done by Arn. The main elements are blocked out and shown to the Art Director for approvals. At this stage it's easy to see how it will evolve and make any necessary changes. In this case the Art Director asked for subtle angle and pose changes but the rest of it was fully approved.

2) Line Art: A tightened line version is created, this one by Andrew. Most comic book images would be taken to fully inked artwork but in this case we knew it would be painted over top, so a tight pencil drawing works just as well and leaves elements for the painter to expand upon. Note that lots of mostly empty space is left at the top for the book title and typical Exalted trade dress.

3) Paints: Christine adds volume and mood to the piece and finishes it off with a creepy color palette and amazing effects.
