Oh, it's only how they start out... they become over a hundred times larger very quickly. In fact, the wee ones need to stay clear of the mega ones so as to not be cannibilized. Moms aren't particular in the least.

Yeah, I live near Albany, New York, and I've been to the Adirondack area several times, so I would've thought that I'd recognize this photo, given that American toads are the dominant toad species. I was in the Adirondacks for about a month last summer for school (I'm majoring in wildlife biology, and I was required to take field classes), and I saw some really big ones. I don't think I've heard of them engaging in cannibalism, but I'm not surprised. Cool!
