Stunning photo. I love the contrasting colors. I'm so glad there are people out there such as yourself that raise moths! Monarchs are so popular that moths seem to get passed by. Lunas seem to be the epitome of magic!

It's hard to believe that creatures so beautiful exist... It's like a faery.

Beautiful. I love these moths...they are actually quite common around my house in mid summer. Did you know that these moths don't have mouths?

Yep. All of the large silk moths are lacking mouths as adults. They have only one thing on their agenda and that is to quickly mate before they die... which is approximately in two weeks time. Of course, as larva, all they do is eat and eat and eat. Guess it's kind of a break to not have to think about eating when other things are more pressing.

Yes, the fact of not being able to eat does have its perks...but when I learned this,it kind of made me depressed. And it also makes me wonder what these moths live on!

They live on all that they ate as larva. It's enough to get them through for two weeks. So, they need to hurry with their business. Unfortunately, they sometimes get distracted by being drawn toward light like a crazed lunatic.

If only humans could regularly go that long without eating. Heh.
One night I was on the computer when I heard something bash into my window. It sounded like a bird it was so loud. I went outside to see what it was and found a Luna moth smacking itself against my window like nuts. Its wings were pretty torn up. I ended up trying to catch it and divert it away, but it flew off on its own accord. They don't seem to be the most graceful flyers.

This is beautiful. I love Actias Lunas with all my heart; they've even made silk moths move over to second place. Do you know if it's possible to raise them in California?
I've been looking all over for Bill Oehlke's website and where to buy Actias Luna eggs, but I can't find it! Could you give me a URL?

Google search sends you right there. Moths of Prince Edward Island is the name of his site.
[link] Yes, you can raise Luna's in California... just remember they can't have it too dry... humidity is good.

Thank you very much! I can't wait for them to arrive. I think my area of California is more than humid enough for the Luna's needs.

Several months ago I (under another username) asked you if I could paint your photo for a project in my art class.
I've finally scanned/submitted it, though under a new name (got tired of the old one and wanted something new). It didn't turn out as I wanted it to, and hardly does justice to this image, but here it is.

Actually, they are becoming rarer and rarer... pollution, pesticides are making a big dent on their numbers.

Of course. I'm not going to go to the tattoo place and say 'this is my photo'. Or would you rather I memorize your full name or website and when people ask I say 'The moth is Greg's and you can see his stuff here'? (I'm not being joking in that, I'm serious. )

Aaah. It's a tatoo for you... and not something you're designing for dA. I'd be honored if you had it made into a tat for you. No credit necessary.
