I decided I'd share how I color my lineworkThis trick was originally taught to me by oncha awhile back when I was seeking to improve my art and honestly it's really helped me (here's the diagram they made to show me how to do it: line shading )
I've tweaked it to my own liking and my style so you don't have to do it exactly like I do!
Here's a deeper explanation for the steps:
1. Start with blank lines, darker than the colors inside the drawing. Usually this should be done after all the colors are done as it will help with the lineart shading process I use. Usually you can use black but what I do to give a softer look; I color pick the darkest color and adjust the color to be darker before making another layer and clipping it to my lineart below (which I usually do in red but it's personal preference).
2. Add the lightest shade of color on the lineart. I usually only do this inside the outline of the drawing to make the lines pop on the outside a bit more but they don't have to be kept that color. This will be the base color you go off of for the shading.
3. Add darker shades in corners, where lines meet, points, etc. This is what helps the drawing pop! You shouldn't just throw darker colors around and plan it to make it look like the lines are a little more in depth. Think of bas-relief* sculpture and how that pops out.
Here's pieces of my art where my line shading is a little more prominent:
When I do line shading sometimes i use more vibrant colors for the darker shades to help it pop even more. I also usually use a minimum of 2-4 colors for this line shading, it really depends the area I'm shading. Have fun and play around with this idea if you'd like to and feel free to tag me in your experimentation as I'd love to see!
bas-relief* is a type of sculpture originally emerging in Roman art; these sculptures have a flat back and the sculpture "pops out" (example: thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/bas-re… )
