Dang, only 2.5cm tall? I'm impressed. I've sculpted small things a couple of times before, so I know exactly how much of a pain it can be to get all the little details in without messing up any other parts that were already done. There is a bit of room for improvement on the crown, though. I can still see a few little "fuzzies" from where the clay was cut to shape; I would have tried to smooth those out a bit more.

The background I don't really have many issues with. It's patterned enough to not be boring, but blurred out enough to not be a distraction, and the large space around it emphasizes how small it is. Try experimenting with different colours of background if you can, though. This one might work better against a green or purple backdrop because neither of those colours appear in the figurine, so there will be more contrast to make it all pop more.

This is really very cute, especially the cape is very well done . It looks like the perfect present for a lover who loves tiny figures

I am very curious how the photo would look with a different colour background in the top half. It looks great now as well, but it could give an interesting effect to have a contrasting colour from the crown. Maybe a light purple, because it's opposite in the colour wheel or green because that colour isn't in the figure? This might make jump the figure out of the image even more as it does now!

Anyway the figure is supercute and it almost makes me wish to have someone to give it to (happy single here ).

I was wondering: is this done using coloured clay, or do you paint it afterwards?

thank you
I'm glad you like it.
Yes, I will definitely try another background for this one.
Unfortunately I don't have it here since I moved to a new place not long ago.
As soon as I got it, I'll try to make a new shot

It's all coloured clay and the eyes are little black glass beads

This is extremely cute! Its so adorable and simple at the same time. Not that I could probably make something like this. Is this made out of clay?

I like the background you chose, I think it goes with the piece. Its a tiny bit off centered, its the edge on the right side is a tiny bit smaller. Most people probably wouldn't notice the difference is so small, it just caught my eye.

thank you
Yes, it's made of oven-baked polymer clay

I see what you mean with the edges, thanks for mentioning

Hello!

I am here as a part of PhotographyGuide . I hope I will be able to give you a few comments and suggestions that you will find useful!

First things first... Let me just say, this is a very lovely project! The figure is simple but elegant. The message is loud and clear. And overall there's a certain level of whimsy and child-like innocence that permeate this project. The use of colour here is nice and bold with a combination that makes it hard to take our eyes away from it. Overall, the figure itself is very nicely done!

Now, how to make it even better?
The first thing that comes to mind is the backdrop of this photo. I am not sure if the yellow is the greatest choice since it makes the crown look dull and the red parts look darker as well. So you may want to consider experimenting with the backdrop a little. The other thing is due to the very short depth of field in this photo, the backdrop appears too far and too blurry. The unfortunate consequence is that something in the background appears quite dark and takes people's attention away from the figure in the front. (It's almost like he's got a Slenderman figure lurking behind him.) And finally, you might want to consider framing the photograph a little as well. Right now there is a lot of "empty spaces" around the figure which - due to the colour and pattern on the backdrop cloth - gives the photo a lot of added information that doesn't involve the figure you want to show off in the centre. You might want to consider a closer crop, or post this figure slightly differently to get a more visually interesting photo (or conversely, cleaner photo without the extra interference from the backdrop.) The most important thing here is to experiment until you find a combination that can make your knock-out piece stand out even more.

I hope this was helpful to you. Please feel free to ask any questions!

thank you very much for your extensive comment

I'm glad you like the figure

Indeed this is a rather old photo, maybe I will try to take a new one.
I could maybe just try a white background.
But how do you mean framing?
Should the figure be even bigger and occupy more space in the Photo?

You are more than welcome!

Framing is a term used in composition. It roughly means "what goes around the central figure" to help it stand out more. In this case, because of all the effects and colours around the figure, the clay figure itself look somewhat small. How to frame a central figure takes some practice - in some cases you actually do want to make the figure look smaller. In other cases you want it as big as it can be. So there's definitely room to play with when it comes to this photo. I would also recommend to decrease the amount of effects (there seem to be a cloudy/misty effect around the border in this version) in the photo, too. We want the focus to be on the piece itself.

I hope this helps!
There are a lot of composition tutorials on DA, too. I highly recommend you to take a look at them!

You are more than welcome!
I am glad to hear that you find the suggestions helpful! I am still learning personally, too. Composition is one of those things that's perpetually fascinating. So hopefully we will both keep trying together!
