Description
Dagger fitting.I screwed up the soldering so i have to make a new one. Still it looks pretty interesting so i thought i should see that. Dragon is inspired by a tattoo design from [link] here in dA
The problem is that dragon is only soldered in the ends but wingspikes are loose and thus may be stuck in fabric-clothing
Another lesson learned - i go and try to make a new and better one.

If doing something like this in silver, I'd suggest two things-
Paste solder. This stuff ROCKS.
And here's the part I hate- try to use as close to the same thicknesses of metal as possible if you can't heavily clamp the piece. Different thicknesses cool at different rates and thus contract at different rates, which makes things like the wingtips I see in this piece pop loose before the backplate can cool.
Just my , from the standpoint of having made plenty of my own messes of this type.
This is a very striking and cool design.

Its usually not a problem - in this case i used stainless steel which is a bitch to solder in the first place. Second try with alpaca came out perfect.

Ah. I don't try to solder steel, luckily.

Hmm, no such thing as a mess up.. Just unscheduled practice.

Bwhahaa - I guess there is much more "uncheduled practice" with some items than actual work

Ok... so you didn't use the acid etching method for this one...?

nope - the dragon is cutout and soldered on the fitting

I'm guessing you can't use that technique for anything quite this deep...

Well - you can etch deep but at the cost of accuracy

OK... I think you mentioned that in your tutorial. Thanks!

Well i have seen about 3mm deep etch on a handguard that was forgotten in acid for about a day

well - its not work jet - just a blueprint. I hope it gets made - it looks promising

psh blue prints take work too and with that great of a design in my opinion you already have something to be proud of

Dear Ugrik,
In the future you might try drilling holes in the end plate just under the wings of the dragon and PLUG WELDING from the other side. It will end up to be a much cleaner look and would solve the problem of tacking down the wings...

Thanx - not a bad idea at all. I didnt clean the surface after treating but made it even worse with testing different salts an chemicals - i wanted it to stay dark as a contrast. Still - i made a new one and it came out much better - stainless in not my favorite medium so i used somekind of silverike alloy instead.

Stainless and soldering....... not always a fun chore... I can't wait to see the finished piece.

Jep - second trial worked out pretty well at least maybe because i didn't use stainless...
. Such projects take time - i have to wait until next wednesday before i get blade back from hardening - cant harden so big blades at home jet. hope i can get the dagger ready before christmas

Just curious, how come you can't somehow weight the wing tips down and try soldering it again? Looks great though!

it cant be done because the underside of the dragon is already covered with heavy patina and solder doesn't stick with it. Stainless steel is tricky material. I made a second copy today from silverlike alloy - i havent soldered it jet but hopfully it will turn out better

Ahhh I understand, that would be near impossible to make work with that on there. Also, I have never worked with stainless.. someday soon hopefully Good luck with the second copy!
