If you are more into the action, you should play Dark Souls(There is a lot of story, but it is all through item descriptions and subtle hints) but if you want some-what up front story, demon souls is better. Both are REALLY hard at first, but once you play a bit, you learn to play it well(Beware, Demon souls insta-kills you in the first five minutes of play if you are not careful. ;D).

Hint: Backstab any thing that moves. If you can't backstab it, beat its back till its hp is zero.

Another hint: You will free a guy called Yurt from a cage at some point. KILL HIM, IMMEDIATELY. If left alive, he will go and kill your friendly npcs.
