Actually the first IBM PC (sold with MS-DOS) was released in 1982, in image there is a PCjr from 1984, in 1985 Windows was released as a user interface for DOS PCs

I'm not big on AIO computer designs. Not from an efficiency standpoint, but rather, they're not easily customizable.
I'm a custom rig guy myself.

Well back then if you wanted to have your own custom computer, you would have to build it totally yourself from scratch instead of going on website and have everything automatic.
