Spawners aren’t hatched like other units. Instead, an officer has the ability to metamorphose into one. (this is usually done by the lowest ranking one, ordered by a higher ranking unit.) The metamorphosis screws up the officer’s emotions and personality, generally leading into a more abrasive and short-tempered creature. Spawners rarely (due to their low dominance status) get a say in colony matters.
They’ve still got ‘the voice’ that officers do (referencing ymedronart.tumblr.com/post/988… ), and can use it to push around normal units. The black and white coloration is uniquely constant among the different spawners. It evokes a need to protect in the other units. (a normal unit with the colors of a spawner is generally coddled a lot more thanks to this)
Spawners may look more bestial than officers, but they’ve still got a high level of intelligence. The typical pastime of a spawner is reading, though they need an assistant to hold any reading material for them.
In combat they’re mainly going to be using magic (as their body builds more energy reserves than officers) or biting things. While an officer moves slowly, they can lunge quickly and a frightening distance.
A spawner’s voice is extremely deep, masculine and sonorous. They make good singers.
Humans are the most confused by spawners’ default genderless identity, combined wih their masculine voice. Spawners do not appreciate you assuming they are female just because they lay eggs or male just because of their voice. And they’re not opposed to eating people.

"punishment" but yes.
It's important to protect the spawner, so they need to have very clear and obvious coloration. This color also makes all the tarspawn units think spawners are the cutest things in the world.

you have yet to talk about the juvenile tarspawn yet, would be interesting to do something on the life cycle on them.

Yes, indeed. I did doodle some stuff regarding Ant's life cycle, but I'd need to draw clean versions. (the newly hatched tarspawn looks like a grub, for the most part. They start differentiating after some months I think.)
I've been considering letting some folks make characters of tarspawn if they wanted, but I'm not sure I'd like an open species thing. I would worry that they'd get so removed from their source that people would start getting confused about whose species t actually is, derp.

Well just make sure you upload that nice artwork somewhere. Also, very understandable. I would be terrified of the same thing about my species. Sadly no matter what anyone does, it's going to happen someday. Till then, the rules on tarspawn are decently strict but still has potential for very creative ocs.
As for the source you could open your own group for oc tarspawn. They could show off there idea for tarspawns there and still have a bit of radar on you species.

Maybe so. Though it'd help to have a more established storyverse etc that one could refer to with that -> it'd be more likely folks don't just think it's a free for any purpose.
Making a group feels too egoistic for me yet. perhaps in the future if there's a big enough interest.

Well, it depends, but I imagine a spawner's general mental space to be in that groggy state where you haven't slept for ages and you have less restraint for what you feel or say. They get upset easily and get tired of peoples' company quickly. das why they read books all the time, because books don't talk back. (though it's annoying that they have to ask someone for help when reading. Perhaps scribing large books with lots of text on each page so they don't need to be turned so often is what they need.)

They're not actually tired, they're just permanently like that. angry and inconsiderate. (their voices would sound like a traditional singing disney villain - very deep and full of tone.)

Officers (and probably spaners as a result) are probably the most xenophobic of the units. Might be hard to have a civil conversation if you appear like a non-tarspawn. : D

Maybe - their general angriness is caused by hormones and brain chemistry being all kinds of fucked up. (that's what you get when you have to quickly turn from a 'sterile' creature into a reproducing one.)

I don't think they'd find it in themselves to be all lovey dovey happy happy, but they'd probably be such that you could have a respectable disagreement and not have to worry about being bitten when your back is turned.
