This is absolutely fantastic. I wouldn't have expected red gloves, although I suppose they match the scarf... The highlighting is just lovely. It's always good to see new Shadow fan art in the world.

Gorgeous. You really captured him. Did you ever see the Shadow/Ghost crossover comic Dark Horse did? I thought it was pretty faithful.

Hehe I was thinking about the part in the movie where Shiwan Khan compliments his tie, and he says he got it at Brooks Bros.

MJBivouac In reply to umbrafox [2009-09-27 17:49:19 +0000 UTC]

Well, I have never really considered the Shadow a super hero...Doc Savage and the Phantom also not. I guess I see them in a totally different catagory...super adventurers perhaps. But while they had adventures, they did not really seek out adventure. It just happened to them. but I'm not sure what you would call it. Maybe because they were created as pulp characters rather than comic book characters...

umbrafox In reply to MJBivouac [2009-09-27 18:26:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I realize pulp characters are really judged differently than comic characters. I really called him a superhero for two reasons. One, unlike many pulp characters he has avowedly supernatural powers. Which brings me to number two. I'd really like to see him get the recognition he deserves. I think the Shadow and Dick Tracy (for villain concepts) influenced Bob Kane a lot more than he would admit.

In short, I would like to see The Shadow basically acknowledged as the first superhero, so I'm just pushing an agenda, really. lol

I am all for promoting the SHADOW, Sir! but I guess I don't want to short change him as being JUST a superhero. A couple of the best SHJADOW related comic projects are probably Howard Chaykins 1980s era mini series about the Shadow in modern times, and Mike Kaluta's "The Shadow 1941" graphic novel.
The SHADOW movie I was so excited about...I got goose pimples when I saw the trailer! and while it had some of the trappings and ALMOST hit the mark at times...I guess made it all the more disappointing when it failed to work for me. And the fact that it did visually hit the mark for the most part practically guarantees that no one will ever again try to make a SHADOW film. The same for Doc Savage...just ignore Pal's film, pretend it didn't happen, it too would be a hard sell and an even harder film to craft. Which story? So many to choose from. And to capture the attention of todays teen movie audiences..with an IPOD in one ear , a cell phone in the other and a video game controller in their hands, playing some super gay anime video game....how do you get them excited about a character and an era that might as well be Medieval Europe as far as they understand it?
Dammit I'm OLD and grumpy1 I hate kids!

umbrafox In reply to MJBivouac [2009-09-29 15:49:46 +0000 UTC]

Hehe I didn't know you were old and grumpy I'm just way to old for my age, and at times grumpy

Please don't misunderstand. I meant no diminution by calling him a superhero. Instead I meant simply to make him both seem more relavant, and I think he deserves a place at the table among the fathers of the heroes of the graphic novel.

I very much enjoyed the movie, I'd give it an 88-90%. I am more dissapointed that it didn't do well enough to spawn sequels, which I think would probably have completed getting everything right. Having a more in-depth story, etc...

I keep hearing rumors that Sam Rami is supposed to direct a Shadow film which would somehow also incorporate Doc Savage, the Phantom and a few other characters I can't recall now (the Mentalist maybe?) but I also keep hearing that he's doing yet another Spiderman film, and after Spiderman 3 I'm no longer sure I even really want him to do the Shadow movie.

MJBivouac In reply to umbrafox [2009-09-29 21:08:01 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps Sam is burned out on Spiderman and is ready for something else...perhaps the SHADOW. But NO updating! That is NOT allowed. No cell phones and text messaging! These days, when someone does a 30/40s period action fantasy film, they always have to include TWO things that have been done to death: Nazis and the atomic bomb! While both were great subjects at one time, now they sadly over used. That was one of my problems with the SHADOW. If the writers can keep these two somehow FRESH, then FINE! But it's too easy to go over well worn paths with these two.

The updated 80's version of The Shadow by Chaykin and Helfer for DC was my first introduction to the character and remains one of my favorite iterations. I'd recommend it,umbrafox. Dynamite just re-released the Chaykin miniseries and I think you can find the Helfers for cheap. They were artist Kyle Baker's debut comic, if you're familiar with his work. Dida post on it a while ago - [link]
