The whole Mary/Gary Sue thing probably arose from the roleplaying community, because it isn't always fun when a character is OP and the other can't do much... That's about it though. I had something else I wanted to say but I wasn't sure how to word it. Like, if the characters aren't OP roleplaying then it's 100% fine I guess?

There is something called a "power fantasy," in which one writes their self insert as, in a way, invincible. Well, not exactly.Β
People seem to think that this is wrong for some reason. I personally believe power fantasies are a good thing, to explore one's own desires through writing instead of trying to take things from others.
I write my power fantasy to get a taste of what I can't have in real life: love, sex, the feeling of closeness, friends that won't leave me, that sorta thing. And people seem to think that I'm a bad writer because of it. I'm not trying to sell my work...

Finally, someone gets it! I have a power fantasy as well, but I try to portray her in most of my stories as an omniscient and mysterious character who assists the characters and seems to know them all. Why? Because she created them of course! XD When she does interact socially with them, she treats them like best friends, and sometimes almost like family, though she can be cryptic and puts on plenty of facades, so no one really knows for sure her emotional status. It's nice and it's liberating. I'd love to give off the same impression of mystery and power as my power fantasy does, and also have my characters as close friends.Β Β

..that is completely stereotypical to the point of having no personality at all, or that is way to powerful compared to all the other characters in a story for no valid reason but because the author seems to identify with it, or that is unrealistic in any other way (unrealistic for the world it exists in, this doesn't mean magic if magic is perfectly normal in that world but rather if it contradicts itself)
Everyone may write whatever they want, but this doesn't mean I mustn't criticize it. They can ignore what I say after all, or they can think it over if they want to.

Yah I don't believe in making god mod characters but for crying out loud don't let those oc police bother you. If you want an ocxcanon then fuck it make an ocxcanon. I mean seriously If you make the girl to the guy's liking or the boy to the girl's liking they'd love a ton of pretty girls who were made for them to choose from. :3 Personally I love ocxcanons. I find those fanfics more fun to read then the canonxcanon fanfictions.

For those afraid of creating a marry sue don't worry. Marry sue is the result of inexperience. The only way you can get experience is by making marry sue. Keep in mind ocs are not like real people. If you don't like them you can always change them up to suit your taste. And if the oc is beyond fixable she is a lesson oc who will teach you about what works and what doesn't. Trial and error is the only way you can learn how to create brilliant characters that everybody loves. Don't be afraid. Every good writer has created a marry sue.
