-= Pokemon Sword/Shield: Grookey, Scorbunny, Sobble =-

These are just some guesses I had about what the three new starter Pokemon - the Grass-type Grookey, the Fire-type Scorbunny, and the Water-type Sobble - could evolve into. Lately, I've had my own epiphany. And my own set of awfully-done sketches to give an idea about this theory.

So! The evolutions I have here are based on different music cultures.

-= GROOKEY =-

So Grookey was the first one to be linked to music, by virtue of all the sound/rhythm words in its names among languages. Anyway, the evolutions I made up for Grookey have a lot of Celtic and folk music inspirations. For these, the stick that Grookey wields is repurposed into a flute, and then a large clarinet-shaped tool. At the same time, the final stage is given details akin to a dryad or a forest elf, as folk music often dabbles in elements of folklore (and because of Grookey's pointy ears).

- Pipuchin (Grass)

- Melodryad (Grass/Fairy)

-= SCORBUNNY =-

While virtually everybody only sees a soccer theme for Scorbunny, I've come to see another use for its high energy and hot feet - fast-paced, energetic dancing. Hence, its evolutions here have received themes of hip-hop and rave culture. Also with these, the yellow marks on its feet and face expand to become luminescent lines. Oh, and I started by turning that small red fur collar on Scorbunny's neck into a jacket hood shape.

- Hiphot (Fire)

- Phosphare (Fire/Electric)

-= SOBBLE =-

I mainly considered the reclusive loner aspect of Sobble (with its timidness and camouflage) for these evos. And I felt that its crybaby nature could grow into another medium of emotional expression, like rage. So I picked out music cultures that seem to resonate well with the strange outcast type - emo rock and goth metal (or any related dark heavy metal genres). The camouflage could also grow from being timid to being scary, like a ghost. And, uh, I honestly figured that Sobble's head crest could flop over to emulate an emo cut, or change to look like a mohawk (as seen here, poorly).

- Cleerie (Water)

- Grimeleon (Water/Ghost)

-= TRIVIA =-

- For these designs, I also kinda followed the theory of Cool, Masculine, and Feminine. You know how the starters in Gen-6 and Gen-7 each fall into one of those three categories (Cool: Greninja and Decidueye, Masculine: Chesnaught and Incineroar, Feminine: Delphox and Primarina)? If we're to believe a pattern continuing into Gen-8, then Scorbunny's final stage would be Cool, Sobble's would be Masculine, and Grookey's would be Feminine. Those also influenced what kind of music cultures I'd link them to here.

- Pipuchin's name here comes from "pipe" and "capuchin". The capuchin monkey is a close relative to the squirrel monkey that Grookey is so similar to.

- Melodryad's name comes from "melody" and "dryad".

- Hiphot's name comes from "hip-hop" and "hot". Yeah, I couldn't resist the pun there.

- Phosphare's name comes from "phosphor" and "hare". Phosphor is a term used for any luminescent substance, like in rave glowsticks.

- Cleerie's name comes from "clear" and "eerie". The clear part can apply to its invisibility, or to clear water.

- Grimeleon's name comes from "grim" and "chameleon".

Pretty good guess.

I'm very surprised this hasn't received any comments as of yet. I know that the official second and third stage evolutions for the starters have been released, but your ideas are brilliant and way better than the ones Gamefreak created.

First off, I love the final stage types. I'm very surprised that there haven't been any dryad Pokemon as of yet, and your design for Grookey certainly satisfies that niche with a great typing of Grass/Fairy to boot. I had no idea that you could make Grookey very, very cute, but it turns out that you absolutely can. Pipuchin would probably be arguably the cutest starter ever if your designs actually made it in, and that's saying a lot.

Phosphare being Fire/Electric is also absolutely brilliant and I'm shocked that this would be the first time that type combo is used.

Finally, while I'd make Grimeleon Water/Dark, I understand that Gamefreak made Grininja Water/Dark instead of Water/Fighting for reasons that I don't know, so Water/Ghost is a good back-up.

Second, I love music, and basing the starters off of musical styles is both original and actually fits in fairly well with Galar in general. After all, Europe has a diverse and bustling music scene, and music shows up quite prominently in Galar, especially with regards to Team Yell. If Grimeleon got in, I can absolutely see the Team Yell leader having one, maybe even as a Water/Dark fusion.

Third, the names are fantastic. I probably would have called Pipuchin Pipeuchin just to make sure the pun came across, but they all make sense and are in the style of good Pokemon names.

All I can say is that you definitely put a lot of thought and effort into these designs, and I just wish something similar to them would have made it in Sword and Shield, because I love them.
