Description
This little girl was sitting across the row from me as I talked with another gentleman about various topics. She stared at me the whole time, never moving. Just blinking. I smiled, took a photo, and she smiled back.Canon Elan 7Ne 50mm 1:1.8 II @ 1.8 Kodak BW400CN Canon Speedlite 420EX bounced -1 FEC

Good lighting on this. The picture itself is great. It has a nice feel to it. I don't exactly like the rest of the people in the background though, I wish the depth of field was shorter. I know that's stupid to say because you already had it on 1.8 and the background is already blurred...
Did you crop this? The ratio seems different than normal film prints.

Yeah, I wish I hadn't sold the 1.4. Oy. I cropped it to 8x10, because that's what size the print will be. Thanks for the compliments, and the constructive criticism. I appreciate them both.

Yeah, that 1.4 would be nice. I'd get one if I had a large amount of money. I just bought the same lens you used for this though. EF 50mm 1.8
Oh you're welcome. You get prints in 8x10?

Whoa, sorry I didn't reply. I get proofs in 4x6, the client selects which they'd like enlarged, then the client gets a certain amount of prints in 8x10. In this case it was 25 prints in an album.
For a nimonal fee, they can purchase the proofs as well.

This is excellent. Her blank pose lends an air of spontaneity and confusion: it is undoubtedly the perfect time to have taken the shot. The composition is quite good, not a fan of central compositions myself, not so bad in portraiture mind. Aperture fine, lighting very adequate, but there is one thing that annoys me. I don't think the quality is as high as it could be. I may be wrong here, but it looks grainier than it should do at 400. Then again, you're the film man, you tell me. But other than that no complaints. The directional light from the side casting half her face into shadow is complimentary, highlighting curves and form beautifully.

Thank you for the detailed, and well thought out critique man. I really appreciate it. The grainyness looks a little on the plus side to me, but as the flash was bounced off of a high ceiling, plus I had an omni-bounce on, I don't think enough flash reached the subject, if any at all. Minus 1 stop from the FEC, then another ~1.5 from the omni-bounce, and you have -2.5 stops of compensation on the flash. So it's likely this was underexposed, needing compensation (more exposure, thus, more pronounced grain) during printing. Again, thank you for this critique.

Thanks man. That means a lot to me coming from someone who excels at this. I haven't showed my client yet, so I'm still a little itchy waiting for the final verdict.
