To get undeformed images calculate r2/r1
That's more or less the aspect your map needs to look undeformed or almost like. the image is treated like a rubber film and "applied" all around the torus
too bad sliders are not enough so it is a manual work.
Also the spherical projection in a 1st approx can look fine also on toruses

You should try with images specially designed with a certain aspect ratio to avoid stretch
