The Sorrow are born during times of strife and loss. The however around the saddest of souls bring them more pain. Most of their victims end their own lives so they can escape the pain. you said this creature is based on a nightmare you had when you was little
this story is very similar to the creation of the nightgaunt (wich is also very similar to this creature too).
