not as much as the red hot lava falling on the people below

the lava flowing from where the claws would go is awesome - though it does look kind of friendly to be honest. maybe that's the terrifying thing, it's always seeking people to make friends with, but the lava flowing from its hands floods the streets and covers buildings, encasing them in solid rock while the heat burns the flesh from everyone it comes close too and anything it touches bursts into flame. I think I've had enough coffee today...

is it the face, even when i cover my monsters in eyes and teeth some people wouldn't mind giving it a hug.
though that would be funny, seeing this giant volcano golem just try to get people to like him but ends up destroying everything in his path

It's mostly the eye's I think, sort of wide open and innocent, along with a non-aggressive posture makes for a rather likeable volcano

kinda thought it was the eyes
i was trying to do the large kinda ghoulish eyes

haha, true. I think body position helps too. I'd drop the head and place the legs in a more aggressive stance plus a few more sharp angles to give menace, a bit like this [link]
I went a bit over the top in tweaking the contrast at the end but it was just a quick mod to show you what I mean. But to be honest I love your character design and could see any one of them in a video game - so I shouldn't comment!
(I'll delete my example tonight, was just messin' about)

Yea, but you can contrast/brighten it up in seconds in Photoshop any time - just drop a "curves" layer at the top of your layer stack and make an elongated "S" on the curve line, the top is the highlight and the bottom is the shade. Play with the curve line, just don't blow your detail out like I did in the example
Now you have to teach me how you do your amazing shading!

thanks for the tip
I think you have heard of the overlay technique. I color the main body gray. Then I put the colors of the character on another and then change the layer setting to overlay, make the colors look darker. Then I place a layer in between the gray base and the color overlay. I usually use three for dark, mid light and light. I put the shading layers between the gray and the color because it helps me see how the body is forming.
After the shading is to your liking I places layers on top for color shading. For the darks use opposite colors and complementary colors for light. For example if your character main color is red you would use blue for darks and orange, yellow for the light. Also I put the layers for the lights on top, this help around off the character. Then I take a little of the color on the background and pace it on the character. Then I color the lineart of the character and place one more layer. This layer will be on top of all the others. Change the layer to overlay and fill the layer with a color, usually a complementary color. Adjust the hue, saturation and brightness till you it is to your liking. I use this layer to help bring the whole picture together.
I hope I explained that well, I am think of making a tutorial.

Cool. I'm familiar with the first part of your process but the last part is new to me, I'll definitely give it a try. I'm currently following the Feng Zhu tutorials on You Tube (excellent concept artist) who encourages a more "traditional" way of creating digital art, using few layers and working the main image on just one or two layers, blending and shading as you go. It's helped me enormously.
You really should do a tutorial on shading and colour. But also you should do one on character design, you come up with some amazing creatures and it would be good to see how you develop one from scratch.

What's more terrifying than a walking erupting volcano is a walking eruputing volcano that physijcally lusts for human blood to be washed in until it's completely covered, then continuing on with it's rampage to get the sexual arrousal from viewing human blood. (Little too much? I'm a Horror writer, so I have to come up with them ost disturbing things I can possibly imagine)

Don't take this the wrong way, but it looks like it is related to the Pokemon Regirock or Registeel. Maybe that's just me, but I really like the concept you have here!

Very interesting concept, did you base it on something? I mean, some golem images or games?

i based it off of several images of volcanoes
was inspired when i was working on an idea for hades

What's even more terrifying? A walking erupting volcano that can swim or surf. XD
Nice work here, definitely!
