I think there's something Dutch/Flemish Renaissance about it. I'm not a big fan of that era (16th century), to me the Protestant Reformation seems to resemble a pretty bad case of Taliban regime more than anything else. The true Dark Age of Europe, with the Term Dark Age being used for the preceding centuries probably being an excellent example of what psychologists call "projection". For example, at a musical level things went from "Hail thee, magnificent star of the skies, in great joy it is we dance for you" (referring to the Holy Virgin) to "From the depths I call upon thee, oh Lord". I mean, FROM THE DEPTHS, what on earth happened to those people? Everything about that time appears to be sad and dark and heavy, much like this picture, even if it was never consciously created to reflect all that. Btw in many of its manifestations Spanish Catholicism seems equally dark and depressing, so it probably isn't about any particular religion, more about how humans deal with it and treat each other in its name.

'from the shallows i call upon thee' would have sounded worse
i think most things that have to do with religion are sad, dark and havy.
religion is used to forbid things, to boss people about, and to find excuses for unspeakable things.

Many humans apparently have a deeply rooted need for "belief". During the great secularization in the 1979s and 80s, most ran straight from the arms of their vicars and priests into those of gurus and "spiritual" leaders. I'm not sure what happened next, but a significant amount of those new agers from the 90s has appeared in the populist (far) right after the year 2000. One contributing factor might have been a full loss of critical thought, replaced by an exceptional ability to buy into virtually anything, as long as it seems to go against established authority, common sense and testable fact. Perhaps they should have just stuck with the church, which for those who are incapable of thinking for themselves might actually be the safer option. Maybe. I don't know. Haha, "From the shallow I call upon Thee", I'll remember that one
