The "I love my country" thing seems more like a kind of redirected Stockholm syndrome. I mean the hysterical kind of patriotism where if you refuse to go along with what utter devils and bastards the "others" are, the patriot in question will first feel deeply hurt and offended, and end up calling you a commie or a traitor or whichever other token of rejection they have at their disposal. Based on personal observation and experience, I do see a strong link between that kind of attitude and abuse. Not sure it has been researched in-depth though.
