Have you ever wondered what the evolution of biological life would have looked like if the first single-celled organisms would have eagerly relinquished themselves to attackers for the sake of the greater good rather than to try and defend themselves or escape? I mean, it seems a viable model, though the outcome is very hard to think through. In any case, a rudimentary sense of "self" and self-preservation must have started at a very early stage in biological evolution. And it ultimately explains a lot of the crap called human politics

What  do you exactly mean by "greater good"? Who would define what is this or how it could be defined?By biological "rules" i guess...I don't know... It seems a bit scary to me . It's like the attackers are a kind of superiors who will survive and some others will be the victims in the name of the greater good.It reminds me of the politicians. Here ,in Greece they say that the greater good is to save the country, but they "kill" the people everyday..Self-preservation is a wise biological evolution,in my opinion, and i believe that the problem of people right now is that we lost the strength to defend ourselves and we just surrendered to the ....... attackers

The greater good in this case would be biological life itself. And no, the attackers aren't superiors because they aren't attackers. There's no hostility in their desire for those they are about to consume, in fact the consumed are "happy" to sacrifice themselves. For the greater good. A good technical question is whether such thing as an evolution through natural selection could take place in such an environment. It would at least look very differently to our idea of evolution, because the notion of survival of the fittest as we know it is largely hostility-based. Like the antelope that can outrun the cheetah.

Biological life itself it's not a sufficient reason for me.In Ancient Sparta we had Keadas(Καιάδας). There they threw the desabled and children born with disability.Spartians were warriors and for them the greater good was the capability to be somone a warrior. So they didn't need people with disabilities in their society. No hostility at all..I suppose they were not happy to sacrifise themselves for the greater good but you can say that it was a natural selection..We are not animals,we are not a superior kind but we are adifferent kind . We don't have to kiil for our food even if it happens in some cases because the system have the power to transforms us to animals. We attack each other like animals because we don't use our brain. Brain could be the greatest gift . It became a curse because of the need of power and money. You could say that in our societies there is a natural selection. We don't care about people with any kind of mental problem,or of disability problem.Aged people is a problem too.The system needs only young and halthy people .. Only them can produce.. So the natural selection is let the others dy slowly...They are not useful for the great good wich is the increase of wealth..Unfortunetely we mimic animals ,but we are not animals,we are human beings an no one can treat us like animals( it's from a song )and we should not treat each other like animals.Different evviroments, different rules.I don't believe in any kind of natural selection between people.

You still don't seem to get the essence of what I wrote. Sparta as a whole consisted of rather paranoid people who felt they needed to be capable to deploy the maximum amount of hostility towards others because they perceived the outside world as very hostile towards themselves, and probably also because they felt they had things to hide. The "closed family" from psychology. And also to a great extent "la condition humaine": by being more "human" ourselves we make ourselves more vulnerable to those fellow humans who choose not to.

What I wrote about was something FUNDAMENTALLY different. There is no such thing hostility in that approach to the development of biological life, that's the whole point. I'm not sure it could have ever worked though. Progress seems to largely thrive on hostility, though probably (hopefully) not all of it.

I disagree about the brain thing. We humans definitely use our brains, though the purposes we use them for can be highly debatable. B2 stealth bombers have cost the US tax payers $2.2 billion each. That's a reflection of the financial "capital" involved. I once read that for its development around 200 whiz kids with IQs of 160 or higher were recruited. That's a lot of brain "capital", which could have also been employed for peaceful stuff like medicine or agriculture. So it's not so much about brains as about choice.

I think most people who eat meat do so because they like the taste of it or because it makes them feel healthier, and not because of "the system". Meat has been on the human diet for 100s of 1000s of years. But maybe let's not go there..

Here i am... You didn't get the meaning of my example. Imagine a biological organism-system where Spartians are the attackers and all the others those who have to be sacrifised for the greater good. I am wondering if those people had the chance to defend themselves and some of them could survive ,could those survivors change the bilogical organism? And if they could what was for them the greater good and how could be this new organism..Better or worst i don't care. It would be a NEW organism .In my opinion evolution needs changes and reversals.I guess that there is a kind of hostility even in biological life. The examples you give me about the use of brain are exactly what i call curse. It's all about power and money as i said before.Imagine all those kids with IQs of 160 and higher were living in an other system where nobody cares about power and profit......(Don't get upset anytime i use the word system because all is about systems.Biological system, political system, social system atc. )And... i am not afraid to be "human"Imagine a world of vulnerable  . How they would breast all the ...invulnerable....

undefinedreference In reply to katiousa15 [2014-05-10 16:21:36 +0000 UTC]

Reality, in my opinion, is an unordered mess with no interrelationships whatsoever, and whichever "system" we think we can perceive in it is merely a result of the incompleteness of our own petty views. This certainly applies to human society, if anything. Those who adhere a belief in "systems" invariably assume that human behaviour is somehow predictable. History tends to prove the opposite

Sparta was a little Nazi Germany buried deep in the heartland of what we now call Greece. If the "imperfect" ones had managed to survive, they might have "weakened" Spartan society, from a Spartan point of view, by introducing undesirable features such as kindness and compassion into it. This is pretty much the issue Russian leaders have today with gays, and so they're portrayed as western agents, i.e. traitors by the regime, and thereby marginalized and pushed into obscurity.

In biological life, ALL creatures live at the expense of one or more others, and all try to resist being consumed. Some are just more overtly bloodthirsty than others. It's not like Athens was good and Sparta bad, Sparta was just EVEN WORSE than Athens. Apparently there are levels of oppression and exploitation which are generally deemed acceptable, and levels which aren't. It helps if the oppression and exploitation apply to "others", like the slaves toiling in the Athenean colonies. The reason why we view upon the Spartans as cruel bastards is mostly because their cruelty was directed towards their OWN. But it's highly unlikely that in the Athenean colonies the "weak" would have survived the brutal conditions they were living in as well. So the effect would have been the same: only the strong will survive. The Atheneans were just better at hypocrisy (through an outsourcing of cruelty) than the Spartans. A bit like the West, with it's trade barriers, which do kill people, versus the USSR/Russia where the population itself was and is being subjected to oppression and neglect. In both cases (Sparta and Athens), self-preservation was ultimately the main aim. And what you call power and profit are just tools of self-preservation. "Every organization's (society's / system's / company's) ultimate goal is to ultimately just to survive in a world that aims to bring it down".

What I was talking about was biological life based on self-relinquishing rather than on self-preservation. Plants do that, to an extent: many shrubs and trees advertise their fruits for them to be eaten, so their seeds can be carried around by animals. But that applies only to their fruits, they obviously will resist being eaten as a whole. But what if they did, could they still evolve into new organisms? (your question) Perhaps as a result of DNA damage due to cosmic radiation, which would make them even more effective at offering themselves for consumption. Or maybe there could be some way of carrying out some kind of natural selection. Or maybe it would just be impossible. I don't know. I did say it's VERY hard to imagine, didn't I?

My opinion is that history tends to prove that human behavior is absolutely predictable by the system..  How much you esteem me as Greek  and Spartian!!!!!!!!!!!! I am joking!!  Well for me there is no difference between the past and the presence. I have the feeling that somehow we are stuk . ....Life is organized to make circles..Nothing more, nothing less..Even when you have the conviction that something is going to change then you realize that it was just temporary and then back again...You are absolutely right about Spartians and Atheneans.Power and profit are certainly the tools of the self-preservation of specific systems. These systems know that the world aims to bring them down under some conditions and they are soooo good prepared for this.. This why they exist and they will..............I don't have any hesitation to respect them.. They have all my respect.Only a result of human DNA damage because of cosmic radiation could save us..    So let's have fun... Let's enjoy every moment every day like it was our last one(Kazantzakis)  Enjoy your day and don't take life seriously... Believe me it doesen't worth.Nothing will change. Remember the fights about the eight hours working.. How many hours people work now??? Same hours as before that and now they are and thankful... ..... Circles.... Wise system......

I was tired when I wrote that nonsense. And the same to you too. I saw a film yesterday about a guy who drives a van through the Greek countryside and sells vegetables from it, somewhere up north I think. It was on German Arte TV where they have a series of portraits of European countries with a rather high emo/folklore content. But there was a guy standing on the street singing, he was really great. I really like that sort of Greek music, with up to 20 different notes per syllable!

katiousa15 In reply to undefinedreference [2014-05-11 07:59:41 +0000 UTC]

Not really! The believe in a world of ideas and not in a world of senses They are damned to  live between two truths.(If we can use this word)The truth of materialistic reality and that of the ideas.Reality is always stronger and has a unique way to "kill" the ideas. This is why i prefer Political Philosophie. At least it tries to combine those to realities.Revolutionaries of today are the tyrants of tomorrow.... Maybe it's right. But  tyrants can  be reversed only by revolutionaries  and life goes on......

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

undefinedreference In reply to katiousa15 [2014-06-11 12:32:33 +0000 UTC]

Tyrants are in many cases actually reversed by new technologies and socio/economic realities rather by revolutionaries. The role of the revolutionary is vastly overrated by socialist-romantic wishful thinking that suggests a degree of human control over History (and most humans love the idea of human control, as it tend to neutralize fear), apart from the fact that revolutionaries usually turn out to be worse dictators than the ones they were fighting (or pretending to fight). For example, serfdom in Europe was abolished by the Black Death, not by revolutionaries.

If you thoroughly dissect it, philosophy turns out to be one big self-contradiction, much like holy scriptures. It does indeed help to have an anchor, like politics or social issues, to make it seem to make more sense. I personally never could get into the sterile mind exercises of "fundamental psychology" either. Philosophy at that level is in essence not much more than high-grade wit.

Interesting to hear from you that apparently even you seek some sort of comfort..

I can't be involved in either unfortunately because to me (a) psychology seems way too much based on unquestioned assumptions, from Freuds interpretations of ancient poetry to "universally shared human values" or "desirable behaviour" and (b) I can see just too clearly how philosophy creates its own contradictions via a mechanism which could be called "context shifting", and in general is totally lost in its own definitions. In any case I don't see how either could be considered any more "objective" than religion, which so many philosophy/psychology adepts love to hate with such great passion. In other words, I don't see how they ultimately can be seen as anything other than belief systems. But if you can see that, both can be a great stimulus to the nervous system I suppose

I don't know what helps me front my difficulties in life, though I'm by all means pretty front-able.
My general approach is one of "when confronted with a threat, turn towards it, not away from it". So many people turn away all the time. And then blame others..

Well i never go away from any kind of threat but life is not only threats, actions and reactions. Life for me is much more than this. I need to know every moment why i act as i act why i think as i think .. Maybe i still don't know who i really am. I surprise myself so often. I looove psychology and philosophy. They never let me to feel still.

undefinedreference In reply to katiousa15 [2014-06-15 20:11:27 +0000 UTC]

You can substitute "threat" for "challenge" if you like. It's manner of speech, a concept apparently unknown to philosophy because they have to dissect everything into little boxed concepts like deification etc. As if human use of language can be caught in rationality. In a broader context I'm not sure myself at all that rationality is The Way Forward for humanity, but to be honest I wouldn't know what is either. In any case rationality appears to cause at least as much damage as it fixes.

It sounds like you suffer from hyperrationality. Are you ever aware of the fact that you are aware of the fact that etc..?  Why on earth would anyone be interested in "who I am" or "why I do what I do the way I do it"? Are you also interested in the purpose of existence and "deep" stuff like that? I personally have no idea why people can even be bothered to ask such questions. I belong to a breed that simply exists (which accounts for quite a strong "presence" incidentally), but that might just be another part of the autism package, i.e. the symptom of a disorder in the eyes of the "normal" ones (and no, you don't have to tell me you aren't a member of that group either, I think you already told me).

Hmm, you did give a strong clue with "never feel still" btw. Maybe stillness is the biggest threat/challenge a human can face. It can make you feel really EMPTY!

It would be very intriguing..There isn't any other kind of normality for me. .. and don't try to escape from what you said about me by this way. I am not a iron made monster o.k?  Hyperrationallity is my biggest problem indeed but it's also my shield.

You know, hyperrationality is usually a symptom of a person being unwilling or unable to face their aggressive and bloodthirsty side.. Or the soil they are

Speaking of stillness, I have to stay busy all the time, like a shark that has to keep swimming or else it will drown. And if I don't I go depressed, or at least I'll become more vulnerable to the negativity of others, as if some kind of invisible force field, a shield indeed, weakens.

Hyperrationality could make a person emotionally "dead" So no danger to be hurt. Not always succesful unfortunatelly...and the fear of them remains and because of it hyperrationality increases .......A flagitious circle...
Speaking of stilness ,i have to keep my mind always busy. I need to think every moment about different things otherwise i go depressed. I can stay still but  my mind is always moving... sometimes so fast ..  i have the seance that it's out of control.I don't really know if it helps me to face the other's negativity but it helps to give some explanations..
