A bit further on there's a sand path with blocks from the same kind of rock lying across it. Next to the path there's a mound with a block on top of it, like an altar. The place does have a sense of mystery if you ignore the rational explanations, which after all aren't that much fun. And in a park nearby there's a hill with a small memorial made from a slab of similar rock in memory of those who were hanged there back in the days when people were still hanged in public and to the amusement of all. (Most would immediately say "the middle ages" or "the dark ages", but there were probably a lot more hanged in the centuries after 1500, which were a lot darker here in W-Eu, though that's a tough message to sell to people who have been indoctrinated from when they entered Kindergarten)

I think this place holds a lot of memories, the dark ages were full of different events, sometimes it was a terrible thing. So if you have a big interest in the mysterious places you should to continue your searches of supernatural. By the way your story is very impressed me, I love to visit similar places
