Description

He met his Kitty, private and unseen;—
Kitty, with large black eyes, and buxom mien;—
Thro' a thin veil of gauze, each snowy breast,
Su'd, with resistless heaving, to be prest.—
Such was the fair. No need to blazon forth
Great Robert's praise, Geneva knows his worth—
His length of nose, his brilliancy of eyes,
His height of forehead, and his strength of thighs—
No virgin ever heard him with disdain,—
No virgin ever let him sigh in vain;—
Thus he broke out.——Oh Kitty! what a speech!—
Fools we are, to hear the dotard preach;—
No good, he says, from sinners can proceed;—
I will disprove him—I will do a deed.—
He spake—with love inflam'd, with anger wild—
And in an instant got the maid with child.

To me it sounds very Norman, but that would amount to the same thing, since the Normans do represent the French Connection within the British Isles.

So do I I should probably be more familiar with French culture than I am, because I did graduate from high school with a 9 or 10 for French in my final exam (which served to compensate for other stuff that would have required effort). I can remember buying the odd Paris Match later in life, to satisfy an inner urge to keep my French up-to-date, but in the end it all went down in a sound "why bother". I've never been to Paris btw, even though it's just a 4 or 5 hour drive from where I live. And now I don't want to ever go there either, because for a Dutch person it's almost impossible to have never been to Paris, which makes it kind of cool

I need to suppress my personality all the time and in every which way among these nice and kind and friendly, obedient Dutch sheep.

The Dutch like to think of themselves as peaceful by nature, which is partly true (the Frysian dairy farmers in particular historically have a lot going for them), but for a large part this Dutch "pacifism" is artificial and had been pumped into the population from above over the course of centuries. The idea was, thanks to this "pacifism", to stay neutral in wars, so "we" could sell weapons to all parties involved, so we could get rich while our adversaries were weakening themselves. For that same reason the Dutch had hoped to remain neutral during WWII as well, so "we" could sell weapons to the Allies and Nazis alike, which "we" would have done without any scruples. Business is business. In that particular case, Dutch "pacifism" kind of backfired.. And trust me, if you're surrounded by people petting one another all ******* day long, and being nice and kind and friendly all the time, it can (will) feel utterly rancid in the end. As in: get ******* mad, for once! Show some emotion, zombies!

The key concepts here in NL are conflict avoidance and passive aggression. I'm genetically programmed to be conflict-seeking, not (just) for the sake of conflict itself, but because having a good row every once in a while can serve to clear the air, as opposed to slipping into a quagmire of carefully disguised grudge, which is where the passive aggression kicks in. If passive aggression were an Olympic sport, the Dutch would be the world's main contender for the title, with the only serious competition to be expected from the Danish, who live in a similar smug and gooey fantasy world of peace, love and happiness. I have to admit, though, that I'm also genetically programmed to have a sliding tackle, aimed directly at the "opponent's" ankle, as the preferred mode of handling tensions. To come in a bit harder that would be considered acceptable in most human environments. So I'm not claiming to be entirely issue-free myself. But I do feel disconnected from my surroundings most of the time. I've come to the conclusion that I might have a few drops of gypsy blood as well, btw, which doesn't help much with fitting into regular "bourgeois" society either..
