I have no knowledge of what story this painting is meant to present.Β I just see a weary soldier returning home on a bleak winter day.Β As such that is enough.Β Wonderfully done.

As much as I am displeased with Koben's actions, those floating airships and smoke effects are incredible! I could really feel the harshness and the cold bitterness in thisΒ YOU MADE THE SIEGE SO REAL

Thanks alot! I wanted to show the occupied fortress after the battle instead of the battle itself so i could show alot of muted gray ashen colors that are cold and add to the snowy feel. The smoke effects are simply one click brushes that i changed here and there so you dont see the repetition

The atmospheric perspective or the entire process in general? This is called photobashing and its a mixture of painting, 3D and photomanipulation.
Β You use all your knowledge of storytelling, composition, lighting and design but manipulate photos by matching their color and painting the correct lighting on top of them. This way you can skip most of the detailing phase, especially convenient on things that are hard to indicate with brushstrokes, eg architecture.
its used alot on concept art and entertainment design where you deliver visual ideas instead of artistic integrity ("i gotta paint every blade of grass myself since this is about my art" vs "here is what the movie scene could look like")Β under alot of time pressure.
you can look up jonas de ro, feng zhu, fausto de martini, rhys griffiths, ben mauro, titus lunter and many more for this kind of stuff

I live in the Dark Ages. I'm looking up the artists wondering how I didn't know of these people before... but I suppose I never asked that question 'how do you do this'. Now I've got a list as long as my arm of tutorials to study. XD

Heyah, I have another question. When you did the airships in this one, did you paint them by hand or did you do some kind of paint/ photo manipulation combination?
I have this grandiose scheme to paint the ship/ airship battle at Linhythe with smoke rolling across the waves from the canon fire, but I was curious on how to get the ships to look correct since both the sailing and air ships are so intricately detailed (OMFG - RIGGING). I'm debating on whether or not to include Linhythe in the background so the shot is from the sea-end, or to have it shot from Linhythe's point of view so the sea and incoming ships (and pegasi) are in the background/ mid ground.

Mostly painted, the metal railing on top is a warped brush and the net texture is from a photo of an airship model kit or something. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipediaβ¦
In this picture theyre so small you need only indicate detail and let the viewers brain fill in the gap. The second one is copy paste. repitition is pleasing to the eye, indicates depth and makes sense from a human standpoint, we like to build copies.
Both sounds awesome. The main difference between the two shots is the story telling. Are we the invaders or the defenders? Your point of view will impact that.

It was actually the entire process. I know the principal of atmoshperhic perspective, although I've never really done a piece where I've needed to use it.
Thanks for all of the information. I had heard of photomanipulation but not photobashing. I'll look up those artists!
I'm really inspired to do something like you've been doing for the group, although I don't have as much knowledge about art as I used to. I'm sure you've had a lot more practice than I have, but you have to start somewhere.

Thanks alot! I wanted to make Valks more harsh looking, more like a Burg rather than a castle. No time for delicacies in such weather conditions. less ornaments , more straight towering walls. Though by now I wish I had included more thatching roofs!
