go darker!
Right now the figure looks like it was cut and pasted from another image, cause the difference between her and the rest of the image is just that big.
What you did in her hair? That's beautiful. Keep it up throughout the rest of her, especially her dress. Her dress looks like it should be really dark, but it isn't. It looks like it's the same shade as her skin.
And maybe smaller cross hatching, or something. Cause the stuff in the figure looks like you cared about it, but the background looks like you just wanted to get the damn thing done, and you don't care about the poor unloved background.
Bam! You've been critiqued!

well, its done from a painting which didnt really have a background to begin with. i still need to darken her dress, especially on the right hand side, so her head doesnt look so small.

It's not that the background is blank, it's that the way you've drawn it makes it look unloved, like you just hurried to get the black in there without really caring about what the markmaking looked like.
You're mom's gonna love this

finished the background today, looks much more depth-y. also darkened right arm, and realized that her white shirt thingy is the same tone as her face. gotta remember, we had to photocopy the painting/drawing before drawing it.
