The blade needed a new champion.
It had been a while since last anypony had taken it up, not since the fall of the Crystal Empire had it been removed from the brazier it occupied, nor had it seen the light of day since Celestia had sealed it away in this dark and lonesome corner of Canterlot's deepest vaults. Foes had risen that could have justified her taking it up, Empires that had so callously attempted to steal into the peaceful lives of her little ponies with greedy claws and hungry maws. But she had not drawn it forth, relying instead on her own power, and not the dark promises whispered by the blade.Β
Such whispers had taken her sister, after all, and she knew all to keenly the nightmare that dwell within this dark blade. They were hers, after all.
Yet, the time drew near for it to be taken up again. For somepony strong enough to use it to be chosen. Sacrificed, perhaps, to appease it. Or perhaps they would master it, and steal away the darkness that had so thoroughly corrupted the blade to its core.
All she knew, was that the fire was dying. And time was running out.
