I think that was on purpose. He starts off a scary dude like Vader and then you realize he's still o person.

Kylo Ren is given to adolescent outbursts of rage, while Darth Vader (eps 4 - 6) never lost his cool. That's where Vader gets his sense of power from. Kylo Ren loses his Vader-like presence the moment he takes off his helmet.
That's also why its hard (for me anyway) to believe whiny, juvenile, Anniken from the prequels ever grew up to be Darth Vader. Clothes don't make the man, as it were and Anniken never had the cold, controlled presence of Darth Vader
And why I think of Kylo Ren as Anniken Skywalker 2.0. Powerful, insanely strong with the Force, skilled even. Ray should not have had any hope of facing him with no training and coming away alive. She kicked his butt because underneath Kylo Ren's tough exterior, he's divided against himself. Kylo Ren is the sort of Darth Vader Anniken from eps 1-3 should have turned out like.

It's possible. It's also possible he can be turned to the Light side or die as he is now, which is the most unlikely of the three ways the character could go. He has internal conflicts but he's trying to change stuff externally to resolve them. That doesn't get you anywhere.
For reference, Darth Vader was committed to the Dark Side. He felt no conflict until the very end where Luke pulled one out of him by letting himself get slowly killed by the Emperor.
