"You are mistaken. When I retreated from our last battle, I was fleeing for MY life...I was offering you YOURS. And now that you've pursued me, it seems you rejected my offer. Now, welcome to the hells of Tartarus."
--- Princess Luna, before utterly annhilating an overly-persistant enemy with a single spell.

"It is not the wrath of the ponies' Goddess-Princesses we learned to fear, it was their mercy. For our folly in thinking them weak and an easy conquest they wiped our armies away, foiled our machinations and seiged our oldest cities...but their conquest did not end in the death of our nation. They have made us a mere vassal, yes; swaths of our lands seized and our new rulers swearing fealty--but we still LIVE. Our merchants are welcomed into the ponies' markets almost as if nothing had happened; we can travel through our conquorer's lands near-freely; our old temples are even being rebuilt by pony workers...to OUR gods, not forcibly to their Princesses, who subjugated US for trying to do the same to them.
"They were...kind, to an enemy who would have made them lowly conquests. We had earned no mercy; fallen without glory or honor...and yet they showed it. They stayed their hooves from reprisals; spared us from serfdom and slavery even if that was the usual fate of the conquered.
"We COULD rebel; resist the annexation that is sure to come within a few generations...but, that would only result in that restraint and mercy the ponies showed in their first victory being withdrawn. Not even the most zealous firebrands among us wish to risk losing the mercy of our suzerian Princesses.
"Not to feel their wrath, but to LOSE their MERCY."
--- Journal of a Minotaur General after an Equestrian conquest of an agressive kingdom.

How does one resist a foe that makes it too good and inconvenient for one to resist?Β

Damn good question--how DO you fight back a foe who conquers with kindness? When they show more restraint in victory than you ever would, can you rally behind a call to "throw off the oppressors"...when not a single whip is being cracked?
And if you're still alive and well...would resisting even be worth it?
Kind of scary, when you think about it....and yet another reason to NEVER piss off the Princesses.

Kickass work. The lighting is beautiful and the effects are not distracting from the subject. In fact, I like how you use the swirld ( intentional or not ) to aid to the composition. Good work.

Yeah, I just meant like, to get the magic-glowy effect, did you use like a low opacity brush and make several layers of blue, and then added lighter colors blended into it?

Underpable In reply to Rise-of-the-Republic [2014-10-18 12:29:08 +0000 UTC]
I used a brush on %40-%70 opacity to draw azure swirls on luminosity layer, then I just blurred them a bit and added white parts and background glowing around magic. Oh, and I also used eraser on about %5-%15 Β opacity to make some parts a bit more transparent.Β
