Description
My second most favorite member of the Drummond bunch. The honor of the first goes to none other than Kaylee, and next to Kaylee, Faith undergoes the most dramatic character development.
While I never disliked Elsa, I still think she's glamorized too much, put on too high a pedestal. I think most people just like her because she's pretty and can wield ice magic, and her singing's not half-bad. I say Anna is the true heroine of the story; nothing else would have been done without her. Even Elsa needed a pretty big push in the right direction. And the movie didn't really need a sequel then and doesn't need a third chapter now, but I digress.
That said, I do appreciate very much the portrayal of the bond between sisters, since you know how much I like stories about familial love. It could have been done better, sure, but I've seen worse.
So, out of all these characters, Faith is like Elsa the most. She was always there for Kaylee growing up, but she learns to really be there for her, in all the ways that matter. Her loyalties are often torn between her mother and her sisters, being the firstborn and all, and it's not fair that she should have to choose sides to begin with.
At the very least, she chooses the right side, so that's what counts.
Then we have Jane Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. She's the oldest, quietest and most demure of all the Bennet girls, but it's plain enough that she's the sister Lizzie gets along with best. She's truly happy for Lizzie when Lizzie hooks up with Darcy at the end, and she's lucky enough to hook up with someone at about the same time, so both sisters get a well-deserved "happily ever after."
Of course, Faith doesn't get her man until several years later, and she would have been fine as a single woman. But in the words of Princess Jasmine, "If I do marry, I want it to be for love."
That was her first sign that her mother might not be so reliable after all, when her mother deliberately brushed aside the idea of marrying someone you actually like. That's not how it went for her and Philip, so why should her daughters expect anything different? Which is sort of logical, but it still gave Faith an uncomfortable feeling that her mother saw her and the other girls more like pieces of property than people of flesh and blood, that no one else's happiness mattered except her own. Lottie certainly couldn't care less about Sheena.
Which leads us to Rose from Titanic, and we all know what she goes through with her mother. As I mentioned before, I think the so-called romance between Rose and Jack is rather trite, but I do find Rose's conflict with her snobby mother intriguing, how Ruth is basically selling her daughter to a man she knows for a fact is uncaring and abusive, and only the fact that he's incredibly rich somehow justifies everything.
In Ruth's defense, that was the way of the world back then, as unpleasant as it was. Money meant power, and some women had to literally take whatever they could get. She even shows some sympathy to Rose's plight, with that line, "Of course, it's unfair. We're women. Our choices are never easy."
Regardless, they make it very clear that Ruth is more in the wrong than in the right, and we perfectly understand Rose's growing rebellion.
Even though Kaylee is technically the rebel in this story, Faith learns to rebel in her own way. She dares to tell the woman she looked up to all her life that she's wrong, that she's done everybody more harm than good, and she herself learns how to loosen up while maintaining some propriety.
After breaking away, Faith dives deeper into dancing, music, and art. She discovers a hidden talent for playing cards, she'll jump into water with Kaylee (though she'll stay on top of it while Kaylee goes under it) and she gets a job designing clothes and styling hair. Since she was in charge of Kaylee's hair at the wedding and everybody complimented it so much, Ren (Reid's cousin) asked her if she would be interested in doing this kind of thing full-time.
And, of course, she meets a good man who likes her, and she likes him back. Lottie doesn't like him because he's just a humble businessman, moderately successful at best. In Lottie's eyes, anyone beneath a prince is no good by default. But Philip is fine with him as long as he's good to Faith, so Faith discovers her dream of marrying for love and realizes just how nice it feels to be with such a man.
She even manages to balance out her marriage and career with raising kids, of which she has three. Naturally, she's the opposite of what Lottie was, teaching her kids to be themselves, do their best, be nice, and have fun.
The next character in the meme is Victoria Everglot, the tritagonist in The Corpse Bride. She's shy and soft-spoken, with parents that don't exactly treat her well and a future husband who only wants her for her (nonexistent) fortune, although she demonstrates a streak of bravery when the situation calls for it.
I've always liked the Pevensie siblings, both in book and movie, and I easily see Faith taking after Susan the most. Susan means well but becomes a bit too stuffy, and that's how everybody sums up Faith: a nice little stick in the mud. The best thing anyone can say in her favor is that she behaves herself, doesn't throw herself at Troy or try so hard to soak up all the attention at a social gathering.
Two bits of dialogue from the movie would be especially fitting between Faith and Kaylee:
"I'm just trying to be realistic."
"No, you're trying to be smart. As usual!"
"I'm sorry I'm like that. We used to have fun together, didn't we?"
"Yes...before you got boring!"
Then there's Twilight Sparkle and Princess Atta, neither of whom are my favorite characters (neither show is my favorite, for that matter) but I do appreciate how they learn to lighten up, not bite off more than they can chew, become a lot more approachable and sociable.
And, of course, we've got a few Disney ladies that I personally like. Rapunzel is pretty self-explanatory, and I feel Nani is one of the most unsung heroines. Anyone who thinks Frozen was the first big Disney movie about sisters ought to go back a few more years and give Lilo and Stitch a watch.
As far as Mulan goes, Faith is most like her in the movie's first half, when she's trying so hard (perhaps a little too hard) to fit in, to become an ideal Chinese maiden and "keep my father standing tall." As much as Faith looks up to her mother, she's practically starving for more of her father's attention and approval, and she already has a pretty good idea of what Philip really thinks about her.
When Kaylee leaves them forever, Faith can't hold it in anymore and breaks down crying, both from guilt about Kaylee and fear that her father truly hates her, that she'll never be good enough for him no matter what she does. Lavinia and Daisy also start to cry when it sinks in that they might be good for nothing after all.
This is what finally breaks Philip and marks his change for the better. Instead of making his usual wisecracks, he gives each girl a great big hug and a long-overdue apology; of course, he apologizes to Faith first. Then the whole family goes to the castle together so that they can all apologize to Kaylee at once...well, almost all of them.
You guessed it: Faith is the first to apologize and the first sister to get a hug from Kaylee. Lavinia and Daisy don't have as much to say, but they also take their sweet time to let Kaylee go when embracing her.
While Kaylee needs a little more time to get over everything, she does invite her dad and three of her sisters to stay for dinner. Catherine and Lottie are sent home, Philip having "grounded" them both. They do have a nice dinner and laugh a few times, so we can see they've taken a step or two in the right direction.
By the time the wedding comes, Lavinia and Daisy are allowed to join the maids of honor, and Kaylee lets Faith help with her hair. Lottie and Catherine are placed under strict supervision in one of the side pews, while Philip walks Kaylee down the aisle with all the pride of a peacock and Faith watches her sister with every bit as much pride.
During the reception, Faith thanks Kaylee for not listening to her after all, for just being herself, and she won't have her any other way.
And then it's only onward and upward from here. While Kaylee's kids adore all their aunts, including Aunt Catherine, they get the most excited whenever Aunt Faith, the former stick in the mud, swings by.
