Part 1: The trial

Ennemies have been caught, heroes have perished, it was the end of a very difficult time in Gotham. After Superman decided to leave the earth and the justice league has been disassembled, new alliances were formed and the people of Gotham were very angry. Superman was seen as a traitor, and even though Supergirl fought against Superman during the final battle, nobody forgot that she was on his side at the beggining of the war. Dressed as a civilian, Kara was working with the reconstruction crew in the city center, when the Batman appeared in front of her. The other workers did not understand why Batman was appearing in the middle of the day in front of a random girl. But Kara was no random girl.
"Meet me on top of the eastern building in ten minutes." was all he said before disappearing with a smoke grenade.

Ten minutes later, on top of the building:
- Why did you ask me to come here, Bruce ?
- We need to talk, I'll try to be quick. A lot of people want you dead Kara, and when the people of Gotham are against a hero, you know it can quickly become dangerous for you.
- I know, I understand their anger, but I did what I thought was right, and I helped you to defeat Superman.
- Maybe, but I can only see one solution in this situation: You need to appear in court and to be judged. The maximal sentence they could give you would be one year in jail. I know jail isn't a good place for a hero, but people will never be satisfied if justice is not given.
- How can you be sure that they won't sentence me to more than one year in jail ?
- Because I have the situation under control, do not worry, Bruce Wayne will be sticking around.
- I guess that's what I'll do then. Can you organize the audience for me ?

Kara was terrified, she didn't like the idea to appear in court in front of so many haters, and didn't want to spend a year in jail, but she wanted to gain the civilians trust again. She decided the good thing to do was to do as they wanted.

One week later, Gotham's Court:
Hundreds of journalists were waiting in front of Gotham's courthouse, as well as hundreds of angry civilians. Metallic fences guarded by policemen were keeping them away from the entrance. Suddenly, a red dot appeared in the sky, and a few moments later, Supergirl landed in front of the door. The crowd started to shout a lot of insults and the journalists to shout their questions: "Why did you decide to help Superman even though you knew he wanted to kill green arrow ?" "Do you think that helping Batman against Superman at the very end of the war makes you innocent ?" She didn't answer any question, she wasn't very talented at speaking and defending herself.

At the door, she met her lawyer. His news were not good: "Hi Supergirl, I was assigned to your defense by Bruce Wayne. Come with me please, I need to talk to you." They went to a quiet room inside of the courthouse. "Bruce Wayne should have been here, but at the last minute, he told me he had to go. Which means he will not be able to testify in your favor for helping the reconstruction crews in the city. He was also in control of the judge's choice, but now that he is gone, the judge could be anyone." "That ain't good news. Do you think you could still get me only one year in prison ?" "To be perfectly honest, with this configuration, the best I could get you would be 2 years." "I'll go with it."
They walked down the hall in direction of the court. Midway, policemen stopped them, and the procuror was there. "For security reasons, we need you to be handcuffed for the duration of the trial. Do you have anything to say against it ?"
"No, once again, I'll go with it."
Two policemen then brought heavy handcuffs and cuffed her hands in front of her. These handcuffs had no opening for her hands, it was as if her hands were trapped in two heavy mettalic spheres tied together with a heavy mettalic bar. The spheres were tight, she could not move her fingers inside of it. They then brought a green glowing mettalic necklace, put it on her, and locked it with a key. Kryptonite. She was now completely powerless. Her strapped arms got down because of the sudden weight of her restraints. She hoped that was all. She was wrong. "Now the legs." shouted the Procuror. Her ankles were cuffed together, and a chain was tied between her handcuffs and her leg cuffs. Supergirl, wearing her costume, was now looking very miserable. She could only do small steps, because of the chain between her feet. So at her speed, they opened the door of the court, and she entered.

She was deeply terrified but was trying to hide it. She has never been that helpless, and she was not familiar with that kind of fear. She was Supergirl, a woman above every human. Now, the humans were above her. The room was full. A lot of people wanted to witness this audience, and the TV Channels were authorized to silencely film the trial for live TV. They all looked at Supergirl, perfectly restrained, entering the room. The cameras were not missing any part of it. Some people installed in the benches laughed at her. It was the first time that humans could feel themselves being superior in front of her. She didn't look at them, she just walked to her attributed place, were the criminals are usually judged. The policemen then brought a heavy mettalic belt with Kryptonite gems on it, and put in around Supergirl's waist. They then tied the belt to her "desk" forcing her to stand. She was now feeling very weak. That much Kryptonite was not only rendering her temporarily human, it was also making her very weak. They were all waiting for the judge to show up. Batman could not be there, an emergency situation, something with a kidnapped Batgirl and the Penguin apparently... The judge finally showed up. "Oh no..." whispered Supergirl. She could see her lawyer's fear showing up in his eyes. It was judge Haley Woodchain. She was famous for being against the heroes, thinking that they were responsible of almost every problem in our society. She once sentenced Black Canary to life emprisonement, but Black Canary was then innocented and was released.
"Let's begin !" She said.

The trial was very long. It lasted a few hours. Supergirl's lawyer was struggling to make his points, and the opposite lawyer was very calm and was very good. Supergirl tried to defend herself when she could speak, but she was not good at all at public speaking: "I always defended the humans against every form of crime !" "So you consider human beings as inferior creatures ?" "They are inferior yes... I mean no they are not but they are weak... Well not weak but you know what I mean..." The TV was not missing any part of it.

The trial then came to an end:
"Question for the accusation: What do you ask for Supergirl's punishment to be ?"
"I demand the maximal sentence madam, the death penalty."
Almost every single person in the room clapped and cheered, agreeing with the lawyer's demand.
"Question for the defense: What do you ask for Supergirl's punishment to be ?"
"I demand a 5 year long emprisonnement sentence." Kara understood why it was more than they initially thought. The trial has been chaotic for her, and a longer sentence was all she could get. It was too late for her to go back, with all that Kryptonite, she was even weaker than a human. She was beggining to tell herself "why did you do that Kara... The humans do not like you ! I should not have given my agreement for being judged... Even though it was the only thing to do... At least I will be safe in prison, and when I get out, I can get a normal life again."
The judges got out of the room to deliberate.
After a half hour, they came back.

"After many deliberations, we all came to the same results: Supergirl, you are sentenced..." Kara was looking at them, terrified, hoping that she won't be in jail for a too long time.
"-to death."

She could not believe what she juste heared. She suddenly tried to struggle, to get rid of her handcuffs, but it was impossible, the chain was tied to her desk, and it was a solid desk... She was powerless, and everyone was against her. She began to shout: "How could you do that to me ! I WAS YOUR PROTECTOR ! YOU PATHETIC HUMANS HOW COULD YOU DECIDE TO KILL ME AFTER ALL I DID FOR HMHMHMhmhmh..." A policeman was gagging her with a green ballgag, filled with Kryptonite. She was now crying, trying to insult the judge. But all the TV could hear was "HhmHhhhhmmhfffff mfmmhhfhfhfhmmmm!!!".
"Thank you for this, once again, inappropriate behavior, Supergirl. You see, this is this kind of behavior that conviced us to sentence you to the death penalty. Your execution has been scheduled to three days from now. As part of the new laws of this country, the TV will be broadcasting the event in live, in order to show to all of the so called "heroes" that being a threat to the humanity is severely punished. Your execution method will be discussed tomorow. We will inform you of it before your... Big day." All of the audience clapped and cheered. Supergirl was trying to get free, struggling all she could, as a medical bed was being brought. She was then tightly bound to the bed, from her forehead to her ankles, still ballgagged, was also blindfolded and then taken away. As she was leaving the room, hearing the joy of the audience, she was crying in rage and could not believe how helpless she was.

But she still had hope, maybe batman will come to save her... Who knows ?
