Description 1. On Horseback.
“Kili, toss me your flask.” (y/n) said holding a hand out for the flask, and another on the reins of her pony, Maximés.
“Why not take mine?” Fili asks kicking his white pony into a trot and catching up to her, Kili on the other hand merely kept point and glanced back at them knowingly.
“Well, you’ve been drinking out of yours all day. I assumed it was empty.” She shrugs before turning back to Kili, “KILI. FLASK. PLEASE!” She calls. He halts his black pony and looking back at the two.
“Fili, give her your water for Mahal’s sakes. (y/n), shut up, you’re waking up the entire forest!” He sighs.
“Well, I’m just thirsty. Gosh.” She mutters.
“Here.” Fili whispers looking away from his younger brother and offering his flask.
She looks at it unsure then at Fili. His adorable quirky smirk framed by the two braided sides of his moustache. His sat up straight and as heroic as he could be adding a wink as she took the water from him. (y/n) couldn’t deny the little flush of red spreading onto her cheeks.
As she unscrewed the lid and took a sip Kili was waving violently to get his brother’s attention. Fili raised an eyebrow and examined his brother’s antics which were clearly pointing out that he should say something to (y/n). Yes, she was being crushed on by the heir to Erabor.
“Uh… (y/n). So… I had something to tell you.” He stuttered. She puts down the flask and looks at him confused.
“What’s that?” Fili feels his throat tighten. No words were going to come out.
So he panicked. He snatched back the flask and kicked his pony to catch up to Kili.
(y/n) was left stunned watching Fili trot away from her.

2. Training.
“I said left!” Fili yells at her from the ring’s outskirts. (y/n) and Kili were facing each other, practise swords of wood in hand. Thorin and Bofur were in quiet conversation on the outside of it watching quietly.
“I WENT LEFT!” She calls back nearly deflecting Kili’s blow and having it hit her square in the side. She stumbles backwards but refuses to show how painful the blow was and growls charging at the youngest heir.
He flicks his wrist pushing the sword aside and holding his boot out causing her to fall face first. She met a mouthful of sand.
“(y/n)!?” Fili calls when she doesn’t do more than curl up into a ball.
“Nephew!” Thorin growls at Kili who was looking pleased with himself, not noticing his trembling opponent.
“What?” He asks twirling round, his dark hair fanning out behind him. He looks over to see a furious uncle, a worried Bofur and (y/n) crying in the sand with Fili comforting her.
“Oh…” He whispers making his way over to Thorin.
“Kili Durinson. Go apologize this instance!” His uncle demands but Bofur waves him to stop talking.
“Let Fili comfort the Lass.” He whispered and Thorin began to understand. His nephew was in love.
“Mahal. (y/n), what did he do to you?” Fili whispers using the fur of his sleeve to wipe the sand and tears off her face.
“Your brother is mean.” She giggles before trying to sit up but grimacing at the pain in her side.
“Whoa. Stay still. Show me.” He whispers shuffling next to her and looking down at the forming bruise at her side. “Oh (y/n).” He sighs pulling her into a hug. I love you. He wants to whisper but somehow, in the training ring, being watched by his Uncle, Bofur and Kili, he can’t seem to form the words.

3. With a note.
“Where were you?” Kili asks walking into his brothers chambers.
“Busy.” He replies tucking the folded parchment under his fur coat.
“Is that…” Kili smirks looking at his brother who was making his way out of Erabor into the housing district behind the mountain.
“What are you mumbling about brother?” He groans walking towards his programmed destination.
“Is that for (y/n)?” He laughs.
“Yes.” Fili sighs.
“Can I read it?” He asks.
“No.”
“Please?”
“No.”
“Pretty please?”
“Go away Kili.”
“I’ll make sure it sounds good.”
“Go play with Thorin.”
“But Fili-“
“No.”
“Just let me read it.” Kili pressures reaching into Fili’s tunic and pulling out the paper. Fili looked ready to throttle his younger brother as he unravelled the paper and began to exclaim Fili’s heartfelt words to the whole village.
“My love!” He begins, slowly backing away from his furious brother, “I’ve been meaning to tell you things I’ve thought for weeks on ends.” Kili was gaining a bit of an audience. Fili bared his teeth and charged at Kili, hands outstretched ready to choke him.
“I just wanted to tell you, that I lo-“ Kili was tackled to the ground. The brothers fell into the mud, Kili keeping the paper away from his brother’s reach and Fili throwing punches and struggling to get his letter back.
“What are you idiots doing!?” (y/n) yells pulling Fili back by his shoulders away from his brother.
“He took my letter.” Fili growls lunging back onto Kili, mud covering them head to toe.
“Here!” Kili struggles waving the note at her, she grabs it confused. Fili freezes.
They jump off each other, standing up and dusting themselves off. Kili looking smug and Fili was frozen in shock.
A little while later (y/n) hands it back looking a little disappointed.
“Whoever it was from must love you very much.” She whispers, “Here.” (y/n) hands him back the note and walks away.
Fili looks down at his letter.
Mud and water had rubbed away her name.

4. Before Durin’s day.
“You are not coming in.” (y/n) laughs leaning on the wooden door.
“But (y/n)!” Fili whined pushing half heartedly on the door.
“No! You’ll eat all the cakes. I spent all weekend working on these for Durin’s Day. Thorin will go off his nut if I don’t finish.” She tells him going back to kneading the cookie dough. Fili silently snuck in behind her just watching.
“That’s creepy you know.” She smiles beginning to divide the dough and organize them on a metal plate.
“What is?” He smiles, not much get’s past (y/n).
“Staring.” She replies heading to the oven and putting in her first batch.
“I was admiring.” He argues stealing a ball of uncooked cookie dough.
“I don’t believe you.” She tells him going to roll another batch of cookies out but noticing dough missing. “Fili…” She growls crossing her arms and looking back at the grinning prince with puffed up cheeks full of cookie dough.
“Whaft?” he asks.
“I hate you Fili Durinson.” She laughs sticking her tongue out and returning to her baking.
“I muft mew.” He replies.
“What was that?” She asks, Fili looked to his hands embarrassed, a bright red blush on his cheeks.
“Nothing.” Fili smiles with a swallow, “See you at the mountain.”

5. His brother, the Wingman.
“(y/n)!” Kili cheers jogging away from his brother, who was being dragged off by Thorin, and looking back at Kili worriedly.
“Oh Mahal.” She sighed rubbing her eyes and placing her ale back on the table. “Yes Kili?” She asks.
“It’s Prince Kili to you.” He demands smirking at the girls eying him from across the tavern.
“What are you doing?” She asks returning to the drink.
“I want to talk to you about Fili.” He says picking at the dirt under his fingernails and examining (y/n) from under his locks.
“Why?” She replies too quickly, Kili grins.
“Don’t worry about it sweetheart.” He laughs patting her on the shoulder and walking out giving a wink to the girls watching him causing them to erupt in a fit of giggles.

“What the hell did you do?” Fili almost yells once his meeting with Thorin had finished.
“I found out something very important.” He smirks watching his brother turn red.
“What?”
“The cute girls at the bar think I’m sexy.”
“Kili.” Fili growls.
“Fine! (y/n) totally loves you.” Kili laughs.
Fili freezes, opening and closing his mouth like a fish.
“REALLY KILI??? OH MAHAL THIS IS GREAT!!” Fili yells jumping around and laughs.
The entire mountain is woken by his ruckus. Fili doesn’t care.

6. Just when it got good…
“What’re you doing here Fili?” She asks looking at the to-be prince lounging lazily on her bed.
“I’m bored.”
“Go play with Kili. I’m busy.”
“With what?” He whines.
“Study. I need a job, I don’t get to be royalty like you.” She explains pulling out a leather bound book. As she walked it over to the wooden table Fili stops her halfway by wrapping his arms around her waist.
“What if you were?” He asks in her ear.
“Fili… what are you doing?” She laughs awkwardly trying to pull away but the prince’s grip was strong. He nuzzled into her neck, kissing it once.
“Seriously. What if you were royal?” He asks twirling her to face him. Her breath catches.
“What are you talking about? I’m just a commoner, just your friend.” (y/n) tells him looking away from his eyes to hide her obvious blush.
“I love you.” He whispers placing a hand on her cheek softly.
She laughs, “I love you too Fili.”
He beams at her, feeling elated. And in her room he slowly pulled her closer, tilting his head slightly to meet her lips-
“Fili! Get up!” Kili yells kicking his brother out of bed.
Fili looks around at the daylight streaming into his room.
It was just a dream.

7. Under the stars.
“If you push me off a cliff Fili I will kill you.” She warns holding her hands out in front of her trying to orientate herself while being guided by Fili, who had blindfolded her.
“I’m not pushing you off a cliff.” He laughs holding one of her hands and keeping his other hand on her shoulder blade. “I’m showing you something.”
“This feels like a bad idea. A bad idea indeed.” She mumbles before catching her boot on a stray ditch and send her toppling forwards. She squealed and awaited the incoming force of the grassy floor but a pair of strong hands held her up.
“Only you could fall over on a flat bit of land.” He laughs tugging her upright and kissing her hand gently. “It’s adorable.”
“Shaddup.” She whispers starting to walk forward again.
A little while later Fili pulls her to a stop and takes off the fabric strip from her eyes.
“Up there.” He whispers in her ear.
She looks up at the dark sky contrasting the bright burning stars. They felt so close, close enough to touch, to feel.
It was breathtaking.
“Wow. They’re beautiful.” She mumbles in awe of the lights far off in the night.
“Not as beautiful as you, my dear.” He replies meeting her confused glare.
“Thanks.” She blushes, but it bugged her a little, after all, he did have that letter from someone else. Yet somehow he was calling her the beautiful one.
“Are you okay?” He asks looking down at her shyly.
“Fine Fili. But I’m late, I’ll see you soon.” She pauses to kiss his cheek lightly before walking off swiftly leaving Fili in the field of stars.
“Goodbye then.” He calls after her sadly, plonking himself on the grass and putting his head in his hands.
“Shit.” He whispers.

8. In a toy-maker’s shop.
“Bofur, I just don’t know why he’s gone all weird.” She sighs looking up at him from her elbows, leaning forward precariously on the work bench. It was littered with wood shavings and dust and the odd piece of unfinished toy.
“Maybe he does love ya lass. Or maybe he’s working up to telling you he’s gay?” He suggests, his hat flopping and bouncing on his braids as he worked.
“Not helping.” She mutters as two familiar faces enter.
“Hey Bofur, hey (y/n).” Fili chimes walking over and ruffling a handful of wood shavings into her hair. She cursed and tried to comb out the mess of her hair with her fingers when Thorin’s authoritive voice echoed in the small shop.
“Fili, can you stop harassing your girlfriend” Both (y/n) and Fili tensed.
“I’m not his-“
“We’re not-“
“That’s ridiculous.”
“Thanks uncle. Now you’ve ruined it.” Fili growls exiting the shop with three pairs of eyes watching him leave.
“Thanks Thorin.” (y/n) sighs rubbing her eyes quietly.
“Never you mind him lass. He’ll come round. Don’t you worry.” Bofur says giving her a lop-sided grin.
“I thought you guys were actually…” Thorin trails off feeling guilty.
“Don’t worry about it your highness.” She shrugs.
“Just call me Uncle.” He tells her before another pair of feet come blundering in.
“For Mahal’s sake. Can someone tell me what the hell is wrong with Fili?” Kili asks looking around at the room.
“Your brother, is an ass.” Bofur laughs.

9. In the stables.
Fili rested his head against his pony’s shoulder in exhaustion. He just couldn’t do it, he tried to tell her, he wanted to. He wanted to pick her up and spin her round and tell her he loved her until he was blue in the face.
It was the cruellest thing he had ever endured. And it hurt so much.
“Oh, jeez, I’m sorry. Wrong stall.” (y/n) blundered from the gate. Fili turned and looked at her carefully.
“Don’t worry sweetheart.” He whispered returning to solemnly brushing the white horse with its comb.
“Fili? Is something wrong?” She asks pulling the bridal and tack she was carrying onto the gate. Leaving it there she wandered over to the other side of his horse and asked again. “Did I hurt you?”
“No, my lass.” He smiles pushing his hair back with his fingers.
“Why are you upset then?” She asks with a kind smile.
“Thorin has been working me hard lately in the forge and with training.” He lies quickly. (y/n) nods.
“Are you okay? I can talk to him.” She says.
“No, I’m fine. It’s not like he’d listen to you.” He smiles sadly. (y/n) nods and walks to his side, Fili turns to look at her.
“Com ‘ere you” she whispers pulling him down for a hug.
He accepts, leaning down and holding her close to his chest. She breathed him in, sweat, dirt, fur and metal. He was warm, hot almost. She felt his chest thump hard and strong. A loyal heart, someone that held true to his word.
“I love you, you know that.” He whispered in her ear she laughs into his fur coat happily.
“Yeah I know Fili, you’re my best friend. I love you too.”
At that moment Fili deflates.
Best friend.

10. The time it worked.
It was a clear sunny day.
The birds sang in spring air as a new day begun.
Fili had finally been given a break and Kili was being lectured by Uncle Thorin about something he had done recently. Normally a prank that had gone terribly wrong.
Fili walked quickly, with meaning and desire.
He walked, breaking into a jog, down the mountain’s steps. He did not stop, he did not bid good morning to anyone.
He kept up his pace, his hair flopped behind him, falling into his hood. His sword jangled at his side and he was ready for a battle. For the taste of blood in his mouth, and the coating and sheen of sweat on his brow.
He was ready.
“Fili? What are you doing here?” She asks looking up from her parchment, hastily folding it over.
“I wanted to see you, it’s my day off!” He cheers.
“Well why are you here? You should be heading down to the river, all the girls are heading down. You should be running towards them. You with all your… I don’t know… boyishness. It’s very handsome.” She smiles unfurling her paper and returning to her writing.
Fili sighs dramatically and sits on her legs which lay across the benches length. She rolls her eyes. “But my dear (y/n), there is another person I’d rather see than a bunch of girls lacking all their clothing.” He smirks patting the top of her thigh comforting her.
“Well off you trot then, what are you still doing here?” (y/n) asks folding her arms defiantly.
“Please, I know you aren’t that daft.” He raises an eyebrow slowly.
“I just don’t get why it’s me. You literally got a letter of adoration from someone but you’re still sitting on my legs looking all handsome.” She sighs feeling her heartbeat increase a little as Fili stands and changes his position do he is kneeling beside her instead.
“I’m handsome huh?” He smirks, (y/n) covers her face with her hands to conceal her blush.
“Maybe.” She replies looking through the cracks of her fingers.
“You know, you didn’t believe me before.” He says taking her hand between his.
“Believe what?”
“The fact that I’m in love with you.” He grins lopsidedly.
“Like your sister though.” She huffs taking her hand away.
“Trust me, if I loved you like a sister I wouldn’t have thought about how many chances I had to kiss you and say I loved you.” Fili whispers, his blue eyes vivid. “And how much I regret not telling you sooner.”
“I love you, Fili.” She replies looking sleepily into his gaze.
“I love you.” He grins.
And on that small spring afternoon, all Fili had to do was talk to her to confess.
They only needed each other to be in love.

The End.
