Description Did a quick 1H light and shadow study of spheres.
I learned that the longer the shadow means that the light source is lower/closer to the object which is Direct Light. This is why in sunset, your shadows look longer than at noon, because the sun is lower.
The spheres that aren't so highly contrast means that the light source is further up and not at an extreme angle. This is an example of overcast/diffuse light, such as a cloudy day or high noon. The shadows are shorter and not so intense.
The terminator, where the light transitions into shadow, is always perpendicular to the light source. This helps show where the light source is, as well as the position of the shadow.
It also depends on the atmosphere, if there is a single light source (key light) or if there is a secondary light source (fill light) which is usually the sky or a softer secondary light.
