I wonder if if NASA would've shortened the service module for LEO if we had continued using Apollo instead of going with the shuttle.

The Skylab versions were launched to LEO on a Saturn IB.Ā  The SM was pretty much unchanged.Ā  It was not fueled to the same quantities as the Lunar missions to offload some weight, plus a few other changes.Ā  The wiki page listed above has a good synopsis of the differences.

Operating with a smaller amount of propellant and minor deletions to save mass are easier for simulations and analysis to handle than actual dimensional changes.

Sadly I guess we'll never know. Still, with Orion due to launch this year there may be hope for Lunar return/Mars mission in my lifetime....

Incredible. I actually saw two of the command modules: Apollo 11 'Columbia' and Apollo 9 'Gumdrop.'

Bah! Columbia grabs the spotlight. Space shuttle, NX-class starship... no love for Gumdrop
