I think this, the Ambassador class and the Sovereign class are my favourite Enterprise designs. Though with that being said, in regards to the Abrams Enterprise, I love the design that was in the first act of Star Trek Beyond a bit more. The pylons were thinned and pushed further back on the ship, the nacells weren't as chunky as they were in 09, the neck was thinner too and the ship just felt bigger. Still love this design though. And now the new A is on the list of favourites too.

The overly forward-jutting engine hull always bugged me, I am very glad they de-overstylized the Enterprise-A.

I have a theory regarding the discrepancy between TOS Constitution Class and Abrams Constitution Class. When Nero appeared and attacked the Kelvin, key individuals who would've set the design trends for the ships of the era were killed or never met the people they were meant to. Thus Federation ship design was drastically altered.
SoupNaziMark2 was right though. TOS ship design would look kinda embarrassing on the big screen today. I personally prefer this version of Kirk's Enterprise. TOS version is 2nd in my book. I still prefer the Sovereign Class overall though.

My beef (aside from the excessively forward-jutting engine hull) isn't the look, but the size: 20 years of divergence and they're building ships that are Galaxy class size or bigger already.Β And that's just the official listed size: the SFX crews can't seem to decide if she's the original Prime ship's size, the listed size, or bigger than a Borg cube!

Yeah the size is ridiculous.

There's also the fact that in a universe where lightning storms in space spit out giant borg-enhanced romulan mining barges turned warship, over a century before even the Romulans themselves, (who encountered the Collective before TNG started) would've met the Borg, the need for military ships and more powerful weaponry would've been emphasized before exploration and science, in order to counter not only that, but also what must've been perceived as renewed Romulan aggression, afterall, the Kelvin survivors would've reported back that Romulans were crewing the ship that attacked them, since we see in the 2009 movie Kirk obviously knew the Narada was Romulan before seeing Nero.
I'm willing to bet the Kelvin Universe had a second Romulan War sometime during the 20 or so year time skip from the Kelvin being destroyed to Kirk going to the academy, and that technology salvaged there, as well as scans taken from shuttles fleeing the Narada during it's fight with the Kelvin, are the reason why in the Kelvin Universe the 23rd century feds are advanced enough to be able to build a ship the size of a Prime Universe Galaxy class.
The TOS Enterprise would've been too small and too lightly armed to survive in a galaxy like that.

Just move that neck forward and fill out the bottom a bit more and we've got ourselves a great design!

Although the model and your illustration is nice, I agree with the other posters- why did the "artists" of the Abrams' Star Trek movies feel the need to "improve" the already classic design? Why did they feel like they needed to "put their mark" on the ship by changing the proportions?

Because...and I say this as a Trekkie...the TOS design would look embarrassing on a big screen these days.
Try as one might, it can't be denied.

I deny it. I deny it vehemently.
Fan shows like Phase II and Star Trek Continues have proven irrefutably that TOS styling still works with todays film-making technology. So does the Enterprise Mirror Universe episodes.
You can't call yourself a Star Trek fan and then shit on the original design like that.. It's a classic that should always be revered, not replaced because todays fans are too stupid to appreciate it.

I was hardly 'shitting' on anything.Β
I merely meant that the set aesthetics didn't look... functional.Β TheΒ pieces often looked too simple and bare to be convincing.Β And bright colors were applied occasionally with no apparent reason. (The red corridor struts and industrial plumbing conduits are that sort of thing.)
For shorthand, I refer to it as the "Fisher Price Effect."Β

Go figure. That's been probably my one bone of contention, the fact that they could have made minimal changes and it would still have reflected an alternate timeline. Sad really...

the only real problem I have with the new design is the inward-arching pylons.Β I mean, the saucer is already extra wide, so why not keep the pylons out wide as well.Β Especially with those big fat nacelles, they need to be spread apart more.Β I'm talking from a graphic design perspective.Β That, and pull the hull back a bit, guys.Β I swear, it sticks out forward like Buba's jaw on Forest Gump.
Not faulting you, or your illustration.Β I just wish they had actually hired some graphic designers while creating this ship.Β There are so many design aesthetics that were violated by it.Β And yet, only simple tweaks would make this the most beautiful rendition ever.Β Its like they didn't want it to be.

the 700m Enteprise is the fault of the animators, and it doesn't fit with any of the visuals except the hangar

What do you think deuterium looks like
π: 0 β©: 1
NO-SoupForYou In reply to Athane [2015-02-05 22:39:20 +0000 UTC]
Clear, I think: it's a hydrogen isotope, and that gas is colorless.Β So the stored fuel would probably be a translucent slush.
π: 0 β©: 1
Athane In reply to NO-SoupForYou [2015-02-06 01:56:33 +0000 UTC]
Deutrium water is very similar to hydrogen water. Except for all the negative effects on hydrogen based tissue.Β
π: 0 β©: 1
NO-SoupForYou In reply to Athane [2015-03-15 16:33:34 +0000 UTC]
The slush is not heavy water.Β It is liquid deuterium, further refrigerated in the fuel tanks to maximize the amount that they can store.

I think that the engine room was filmed in an old distillery, that'd explain the pipe
π: 0 β©: 1
Athane In reply to RyadrusTheWolfDragon [2015-01-18 19:37:34 +0000 UTC]
The deuterium pipe was built for the scene, the look of engineering and comms was because of where it was filmed. Though, wish they had made it so tall and left all that open space aobe it.

Problem with the "mistake" is that this Enterprise wasn't completed until 2258 which resulted from the Romulans attacking the Kelvin in 2233 before the Enterprise was suppose to be commissioned in 2245 resulting in Starfleet changing its priorities because the Romulans after a hiatus that lasted decades seemed to have reemerged with massive ships and advanced weaponry not knowing that the Narada was actually from the future.
Thereby Captain Robert April was not able to command this Enterprise due to those changes.
Perhaps the next Star Trek movie will be dumb down for the critics.

I don't know. The first three were pretty dumbed down to start with. They're aimed at an audience who think Tarantino films are too cerebral.
You make JJ Trek any dumber and you'd have to water it twice a week

The Enterprise was still under construction when Robert April was supposed to be commanding it. It was delayed because of the surge of technology gained by the Kelvin crew from their scans of the Narada.
