Thanks for sharing this. I've been into scale models for the past year and a half, and managed to finally get my hands on an AMT/Erl U.S.S. Defiant NX-74205 off of eBay. The kit is like fairy dust. Although, I'm importing it from the USA--the person's asking price was about Β£50, they accepted my offer of Β£33--shipping, duty and import taxes were bloody extortionate at around Β£38 (give or take a few pennies). That's still a bargain, I see offers of Β£90-250 exc. shipping.

I'll more than likely be using this as a point of reference.

"Escort" type... "Warship-in-all-but-name" type morelike.Β  The corvette that thinks it's cruiser-strength... and might be right about that.

That "tough little ship" was also nicknamed "the battle turtle" behind the scenes of Ds9.

Fantastic and very helpful.Β

I used this to help recreate the defiant for a 3d animation class, and I was wondering. Our instructor said we would get extra credit if we uploaded our animations to youtube, would you allow me to do that with my defiant model? I am asking since I used your image to texture it. You will, of course be credited.

Thank you!

Except it didn't do much against the Borg in First Contact except get hammered and almost lose life support needing the Enterprise to rescue it! It did kick Dominion ass pretty well, though

Great picture, Β as usual-you've done some amazing work on Starfleet ships.

I think the battle of sector 001 (first contact) was a running battle that lasted over 3 hours. The Defiant held up pretty well.

It was also a TNG movie not a DS9 movie so the Enterprise had t be the hero.

Another thing to point out.

If i recall from an Eagle Moss point of view when this ship was designed in various concepts it was intended to be called the USS Valiant but since that was rejected the defiant in both TOS Constitution this DS9 version is the result.Β

Tough, vicious, armed to the teeth and armoured like an armadillo, with a set of engines that have to be tweaked down or it tears the ship apart and absolutely deadly in the hands of Worf.

God I love this ship.

Just a few little details.

First of all, the dimensions of the ship are a debate among trek fans. It is believed originally to have been 170mtrs long, if scaled to that you find out that the ship was intended this way, including room for the infamous deck 5 mentioned/visible in the series.

It had a romulan cloak originally, but after it's destruction it's subsequently renamed Sao Paulo had a klingon cloak installed, arranged through Worf and Martok.

Your image is quite good. I wish I had the ability to render drawings in this formate. I truly take my hat off to all of you who do this art. Some information on DEFIANT's original concept. In an original concept cutaway drawing the two triangle shaped wedge sections on either side of the main deflector/sensor array were shown to be some kind of seating area. Possibly a small transit pod or even an escape pod.
In subsequent drawings this was changed. Even so, I still think the ship has a problem. To my mind it is backwards! Look at it in profile. When viewed this way, what is the rear drive section looks somewhat like a control area/bridge where flight crew might sit. The nacelles are slightly forward of the center, and give the ship a more balanced look. What should be the sensor array deflector section has a kind of Cardassian drive look to it, and adds to the overall balance of the ship. In its normal layout, this drooping bow looks a little strange. Almost an ant-eater look.
As I said, when viewed from the side, the DEFIANT looks more efficient, streamlined, and bears something of a resemblance to a manta ray. In my spare time, I have made some sketches of DEFIANT in this configuration with slight modifications.

A warship is a warship no matter what you want to call it, and when you get the biggest guns you can find and strap them to an engine that is a warship.

I always imagined that the bits on the front of the ship (just forward of the nacelle cowlings) would be something like pop-out weapons modules.

Oh I haven't subscribed to the Magazine itself, and I haven't brought any issues of the Magazine either, cos I just want to get only ships that interest me. I already own a model of the Enterprise NX-01 for example, as well as the original Enterprise, Enterprise-E and Voyager.

The ones I do plan to buy of the Magazine are for the following models -

U.S.S. Defiant NX-74205

U.S.S. Reliant (Miranda class)

U.S.S. Prometheus

So just those 3 really. The rest don't seem to interest me. I do like ships such as the Klingon Bird of Prey and the Borg Sphere, but just not interested in getting them as Model's.

Saw the latest issue, the Voyager one. It looks great, just a shame the wings can't go up and down like they did in the series.

in the turn based game "Birth of the Federation"Β  the Defiant Class is a Heavy Escort.Β Β  Like the one on TV it packs a punch but its upkeep is cheap in the game and its fast as hell so you can run them in wolf packs to defend multiple systems.Β
