They didn't. The Redstone was only used for sub-orbital flights.

Indeed. Its only intention was to test whether or not the Mercury Space Capsule could survive and function beyond the atmosphere, as well as the Astronaut's ability to control it. But back then, EVERYTHING was brand new. The engineers and doctors at NASA were scared to death of launching this thing with a man on it, all the way up until Alan Shepard finally called out "LIGHT THIS CANDLE!!!"
