The Prometheus is such a cool ship. It’s a shame that it’s not in Picard

Undoubtedly the most efficient tactical vessel Starfleet ever made.

Beautiful!
I once submitted a short manuscript to RH "Best of Both Worlds" called "Prometheus Unbound" - in the story (after Voyager's return)Β

Admiral Janeway convincesΒ the Federation council to refit the Prometheus with the tech her future self gave to Voyager to return to Earth and the Federation scientists (along with Seven of Nine) configured the Prometheus with a Quantum Slip Stream drive - its mission:

Starfleet Orders:

"To ascertain the status of the Borg Collective, to defend Freedom, and Federation Alliance interests - And to assume whatever role necessary in dealing with the Borg Threat"

- the manuscript was rejected (but that's okay I have two novels of my creation coming out this year)

Based on my own experiences with the Prometheus class in STO (not sure how many people would be willing to consider any of that canon) I believe this to be one of the strongest Federation escorts they have.Β  I can easily see this ship becoming a long term member of the Federation ship family.

Forget Abrams' USS Vengeance, THIS is Starfleet's warship. Beautiful

Good point. I wonder which would win in a skirmish?

Prometheus, definitely. Vengeance might be bigger, but Prometheus can separate into three combat-worthy vessels, allowing it to split the Vengeance's fire. That size also means it's outclassed in maneuverability. As long as Prometheus can dodge Vengeance's attacks or shrug off what hits it takes while going for Vengeance's vital areas with phasers on full power, Vengeance dosen't stand much of a chance.

The Vengeance ultimately was designed on the principle "bigger is better". As such, it was made to be bigger and badder than the Constitution class (aka, the Enterprise). However, as the old saying goes in dick measuring, "it's not the size that counts, it's how you use it".

while "neat"experimental ships arent neccesarily better then proven designs, also battle cruisers as a naval ship " in the real world were a compromise ship. they Β had firepower and speed but lacked protection, many british battlecruisers blew up at the battle of jutland as did the HMS Hood when it fought the Bismarck.

give me a tried and true design any day of the week.

Also wouldn't all tried and true designs be neat experiments until they have proven themselves in service?!

The Hood was an exception to the rule I think - the plate armour on its bow was replaced with lighter materials to make it lighter and more maneuverable. Of course this is where the Bismark's round hit and penetrated through to the ammo dump which resulted in the 'critical hit' that sank the ship in 5 seconds. If the armour had been left alone there is a good chance the Hood could have weathered the barrage and rallied back against the Nazi behemoth.

Archaeological surveys have since been done on the Hood's wreck and it has been determined that she was leading into a defensive turn upon impact so it seems likely that they would have at least escaped the Bismark...Β

FYI Widwindsca, sadly you are incorrect regarding the Prometheus Class, as it was later seen on TV escorting Voyager to Earth on it's last episode, we also see it in the 26th Century when Captain Archer time travels forward to the Enterprise-J where you see the Prometheus flying past one of the windows in battle, proving it became one of the Federations long & well used classes of Starship.

So in short, it became a "Tried and True Design".

As for how well it takes a beating, well during the "Message in a Bottle" episode, it got attacked by Romulans (assumed when the Romulans first took over the ship), attacked again when the Federation tried to take it back, then attacked again by Romulans, and of course being able to disable the pursuing Federation ships and destroying a Romulan warbird. Call me crazy, but that ship hardly showed a scratch, or an exploding LCARS panel during that episode.

I'm sure faster ships were build between the 24th and 26th centuries, but at the time it was built, the Prometheus was the FASTEST ship in the fleet, easily outrunning the Sovereign class.

Β  i don't really like how federation ships look, like a flying saucer with engine pods attached. the Prometheus class is an exception. i always loved it for it's looks, it is a pretty cool looking ship. oh, and it's packed full of high tech, advanced and experimental technology. it can even split into 3 separate fully functional combat capable ships. it earns bonus points for being a battlecruiser. i love battlecruisers. idk why, i just do.
