Description I decided to start creating a series of very simple scenes to practice my lighting skill. I plan to make one scene every two or three days.

This one took me two hours to complete. No FG, GI, AO or anything fancy.

Wow, this is awesome. I love the colours you used too, makes the atmosphere look really cosy.
I'm not familiar with Maya, I use 3ds max but this is really cool. Great job

this is great, I like the shapes and lighting, I don't suppose you do video tutorials do you? I want to learn maya, but really have no idea where to begin, how did you pick it up? or if you could direct me to anything you used to help you get started?

Sorry, I am a little bit short on time recently, but I will share some tips on lighting once I have some spare time.
If you are serious about learning Maya and plan to go into CG industry, Digital Tutors is definitely the first and the best place for you to check out. You need to subscribe to watch most of the tutorials, but they are worth the money.
Another site is CGtut. It has a load of free tutorials, which makes it a pretty good alternative to Digital Tutors.
Gnomon workshop is also a very great place to go to, but most of the tutorials are for experienced Maya users, which may not be suitable for you at this point.

I hope this is helpful

Thanks for the reply, will look into those, I suppose it's just another tool I want to try and learn, it seems like its becoming a constant requirement these days for 2d artists to know a bit of 3D.

Exactly, it's just another tool.
you are a very good 2D artist already. it won't take you too long to master Maya. After all, It's always a good idea to expend your knowledge

WOW!! very nice and clean! Can I assume this is in Maya?

Is modelling included in the 2 hours? (cos that would be.... crazy)

Yes, this was modeled in Maya and rendered with Mental Ray
the entire process (modeling to rendering) took me two hours
