the actual game is in C++ this is just a GFX demo in flash

The game is being coded in C++. Looks like Urimas used flash for this demo though, heh.

Looks pretty sweet.

A side note on the music: you mentioned that you were planning on having different music for each area. I feel like this could be quite jarring to the playing experience if the music changes this rapidly, and I feel this is already somewhat apparent in this demo since the music changes when you go from inside to outside the library and back again. I would like to suggest that when a song plays, it is played in its entirety - only once the song ends does the next song begin, and the next song to play would be chosen based on the location the player is in. I feel this would lend itself to a much smoother playing experience.

we might do fading so when you leave an area the music fades out while the new tune will fade in

Hmm, that would be better than a direct transition, but I feel that would still be noticeable since the rhythm most likely wouldn't be perfectly synced, so for at least a brief moment you'd be listening to two independent songs.

I think the simple fading while changing locations will be enough. For more precise example see Chrono Cross - the best way to change location theme/track. Fels natural an don't bother the gamer.

Chain Alg here: A fade in and out of a song for each area is probably the best bet. Since the songs are to be loopable, each file will have some bleed-over from the previous. To keep this from being noticeable when a song starts, it is best to fade in. Having the songs wait for an end won't work since there really are no endings. These versions are not looped. We were still deciding on how the looping would work, but I think this fading idea is the best bet.

Also, I have an idea for an item available in gameplay that allows the player to listen to any song from an unlocked area... the "iPony"

One more suggestion, and then I'll shut up, promise.

When Spike is moving East or West, have him move at 100% speed. When he's moving North or South, have him move at about 70% speed, to compensate for the camera view you have. Assuming that table in the library is perfectly circular, it should take him the same amount of time to pass it going East-West as it does going North-South. Moving diagonally, Spike should move at about 70% speed on the East-West axis, and about 50% speed on the North-South axis (the diagonal of a square is ~1.4 times the length of its side.)

A couple more suggestions:

1.) Any time Spike turns 90 degrees or more, his sprite should turn - that is, it should very quickly face in all of the intermediate directions before entering a walk cycle. If Spike is facing West, and he begins moving East, his sprite should very quickly face Southwest, South, and Southeast (in that order, obviously) before entering the East-moving walk cycle, so it looks like he's turning on the spot (he can move East while he's turning, though).

2.) Perhaps make some blinking eye sprites for each character to lay over the main sprite, so that characters blink while idle or walking.

Ooh, nice work.

I think Spike would look better if his walk cycles looped about twice as quickly. He has pretty stubby legs, so he seems to cover way too much ground for each step he takes right now.
