"It's difficult to kill what was once your ally." -Cap. LatosAfter the balance was destroyed, darkness could once again take form. And along with it the revenants returned. Twisted and vile beings created from those who perished at the hands of darkness itself. They are bound to the objects worn or used by the defeated (usually armor or weapons) and appear to be in the process of "burning" away the remenants and replacing it with a pure, physical form of darkness.
These beings possess no sapience and appear to beheave as a collective hivemind despite having no real forms of communication, but are intelligent enough to adapt in combat and attack in groups. The black fire that coats thier bodies is the parallel opposite to regular fire, it absorbs light instead of emmitting it, "burns" extremely cold, and has the ability to slowly burn through metals and other inorganic materials.
Evidence shows that these originated back during the end of the old empire, where the ruins that stand today show that most of it was destroyed during some sort of massive event. Shortly after, they became dorment for many years before reawakening in this current time, where evil takes control of the strongest empire and chaos drives the land into a state of war as the base of morals are torn further as time passes. War is what darkness is fueled by, and the remenants of the old empire have come to strike again.
Revenants are not limited to any kind of living being that possess sentience. All are capable of selectively converting any warrior they defeat. (This is usually inflicted by bite) The infected quickly burn away, allowing the darkness to bind to the physical objects used. If there is not enough physical matter to bind to, the darkness will only cling to the spirit of rage the previous warrior had, creating a revenant without armor. Revenants grow stronger with time, as thier intangible bodies fuse to the armor, then purify their form to harness the fire they wield. Revenants will always take the appearence of the previous being they were created from. Lastly, they will always grow stronger when they kill anyone.
There are ways they can be stopped however, it depends on how they were formed. Revenants that are bound to armor are extremely durable to physical attacks, but are vunerable to magic. Revenants that are pure are the opposite, they are resilient to magic due to their purified form, but are now susceptible to physical attacks because they are fully bound to a physical form.
Upon their appearence, the Golden empire has struggled to surpress this new threat and it seems to feed off the constant forces they send, their attacks have only gotten worse as the storm draws near...

Another one done! I like how this one came out. It was a concept to create a common threat that wasn't too generic (like zombies or robots) but was also not living nor construct. Also as an award for reading this all the way down here, here are some more random facts about revenants.
- Revenants represent uncontrollable wrath and the devastation that war can cause
- it is currently impossibe to "cure" or "restore" a revenant
- They possess great regenative abilities
- Arkos is the only one to possess a seperate sentience
- If the latter is true, this may also mean that Archeon may be a Revenant of the highest caliber, but we're not sure...
- They are present during the entire timeline - the past, present, and future
- They do not speak and are only capable of metallic, broken cries
- all show unnatural agility and strength
