Description
Speed painting about 9 hours PSC3 ( not so speedy at nine hours but it started as a speed painting with no drawing )If you haven't seen it, or for that mater heard of it. I must suggest "The Return to Oz" the Wizard of Oz two. I was looking up an old teachers list of a credited works and this animation reference on Oz II comes up and It flicks a light switch on in my brain that sort of remembers a creepy ass Wizard of Oz two. Sure enough I found a down loadable copy and as you can guess, I watched it. Its crazy, dark and smells like a Tim Burton movie ( it's not but it should be ) It begins with Dorthy going to get electro shock therapy so she stops talking about this "land of Oz". She then gets back to Oz only to find it destroyed and a princess running the show who turns every one to stone and cuts the heads off the people to wear from day to day. She then has to fight a demon who stole back all his emeralds from the emerald city who happens to live across a desert than turn anything living to sand instantly. In short this movie was crazy weird and I suggest it if you enjoy movies like the "Dark Crystal" and "labyrinth".

This was (and is) one of my favorite movies as a child. My sister thought I was crazy because there were so many frightening scenes in it, but I just loved it to pieces. The movie still makes me cry when I watch it. The music kills me... So beautiful...
Anyway, yeah, it was pretty dark, but I think I liked that. Your picture is amazing and I love how everything reflects off of Tik-Tok's armor. Billina in Jack's head is a little creepy though... O.o

I found this and thought the movie looked cool from your picture and discription of it so I just finished watching the whole thing on youtube. I was really expecting it to be darker, especially from how you depicted here, but it was made in the 80s by Disney... Your picture is amazing, with all the details like how dorothy is reflected on Tik Tok and the dancing headless girls in the background. I wish the movie was more like your picture... maybe Tim Burton can re- do it!

That's amazing artwork, well done! Return to Oz, like the original Judy Garland movie, didn't do all that well at the box office, but later became something of a cult hit -- maybe, in another 50 years, it'll be as big as the 1939 movie? But it isn't really a sequel to the Judy Garland film: It's based more on the second and third L. Frank Baum Oz books, which is why it has a different tone (and no singing). Sadly, these days most people have forgotten the books, which were the Harry Potter of their day, so Disney advertised it as a sequel to the movie.

First I must say thanks. But Im a bit confused about your journal stating that "return to Oz" is not the second in the line of Oz Movies. I followed the books and it sure felt like the sequel to the original. All the same I very much agree that it was a Tim B. Movie before his time as the master of creepy cute movies. I only wish there where more like it.

But you said yourself, Laberynth and Dark Crystal were like it. P.S: what I meant in my journal is that people seem to think of the Return to Oz movie as the sequel to the original Wizard of Oz movie's continuity (i.e: I once had someone tell me they didn't like Return to Oz because it didn't have any musical numbers in it!).

good point there wasnt any singing so it was a bit different than the first. Not to mention it was a bit darker than the first.

Also, if ever they'd adapt Stephen King's Dark Tower sires, they could serve as a great fore runner for the next wave of fantasy adventure movies, seeing as I felt those books had more of an Alice in Wonderland / Land of Oz feel to them.

Yup. You should give 'em a look. They're kinda like "LOTR", but with cowboys instead of elves (it's actually much, MUCH grander in scope than it sounds...). There are seven books in total. Be warned though: I'm still trying to shake the impact the ending had on me, but it's completely worth it.

This should so be a DD. The shading and expressions on Jack and the tree really help recreate the diseased and eerie atmosphere of the movie.

really nice, if theres one main point id have to raise is the control of white, or in this case the reliance on the dodge tool or similiar function tools.. you tend to loose focus with so many visual sinkholes and well, brighten everything up, losing what could potentially be a very freaky nice pic and ambience!
Every digital convert im sure, has his/her time with the Dodge.. heheh.. you can see in my gallery over time how i try [mostly in vain] to kick the habit and build a better understanding of light, both the seen and taken (photo)! Good luck with that!

You couldn't be more right and believe me I try to do my best to not use those tools. In fact I try never to use black or white but In the end I always want a really high contrast on the closer objects with out the rest of the picture being washed out. Ahh Ill get it one day, thanks for the tips and your time its much appreciated.

Awesome work, particularly the background and the reflections on that metal thing.
That movie sounds a lot like American McGee's Alice, and probably like his new version of the Wizard of Oz. It also sounds awesome, so I'm going to try to find it.
Great work!
