Description This kind of vowels aren't Latin, so they where mainly brought by Germanic influence. They are very common in Oil, Arpitan, Piedmontese, Ligurian and Lombard languages. In northern Occitan, sometimes called "Transoccitan", all front rounded vowels are kept, because of Oil closeness, meanwhile proper Occitan only keeps /y/ (Close front rounded vowel).

Please notice that the difference between mid front rounded vowel /ø/ and open front rounded vowel /œ/ can be very slight in some varieties.

Somebody says it is due to the Germanic influence.
